Soccer Star grabbed an exclusive interview with Eugene Clarke following his return to management.
(Q) Are you pleased to be back in football management?
(A) Absolutely! Southampton is a fantastic football club and although they havebeen through the mill in recent years, im confident that given time, we could be back playing the big guns very soon. There is still some fantastic talent here and i'm looking to get that out of my players very soon.
(Q) What do you say to the Southampton fans who are unhappy with your history of poor commitment to the club you manage?
(A) All i can say to Southampton fans is that i've needed this break from management to gain more knowledge of the game and i feel it's the right time and the right club to start again. Every manager needs a chance to prove themselves and i can promise the fans my full commitment to helping them avoid the drop.
(Q) Can Southampton survive the drop this season, considering 2 teams have now had points deducted in your league?
(A) Yes i believe so. It's a very tough league but i see us as 1 of the clubs who can go on a run now and get a few much needed points. We got a very good point at Fulham in a game we dominated and when i joined this club i realised that the defence needs tightening so that clean sheet is very pleasing. I can see us staying up for sure.
(Q) Danny Guthrie reportedly wants a guarentee over first team football so can you clear up his situation?
(A) Every player, including Danny, will get the chance to prove themselves. He is a very talented player but he is going to find it tough to get in to this team with the current midfielders that i have. It's a long season and i'm going to need every player.
(Q) What is your long term plan for Southampton?
(A) I'm here for the long run for sure. I want to keep Southampton up this year and next season i will look to improve my squad to a top young squad that will challange for the promotion next season. I have big plans for this team and it starts today. Come on you Saints.
