Arsenal Manager Statement

Today Arsenal Manager Simon Newcombe attending a press conference at the Emirates Stadium

I felt it was time to announce publically a decision made behind the scenes concerning my position at the football club. Following the disappointing draw with Bolton at the weekend I have tendered my resignation to the Arsenal board. With respect to Bolton, this is not the sort of result I think the arsenal fans are deserving of, and it became the final straw.

The media will have you believe that I have been under pressure for some time, and there is some truth to this, but the honest assessment is that I have been given enough time to secure silverware during my time at the club, and for whatever reason I havent achieved this. I will gladly take the pressure off the players, indeed it is part of a managers job, but I am an arsenal fan first and foremost and perhaps in the cold light of day it is time for someone else to have a shot at bringing success to the club I love

Any issues I have had with the board over the years will stay behind the scenes as I feel this is the dignified way to proceed. Neither will you hear stock lines from me about why I have chosen to do this. I think we all appreciate that many managers resign with ulterior motives or to engineer a move elsewhere. To be frank, currently I have no firm offers from other clubs, and this is purely a decision based on bringing the best opportunity to the club that I love

I have asked the board that I continue until the end of the season to continue our fight with Liverpool for 4/5th place, and our semi final against Chelsea in the FA Cup. But the very fact that we are not fighting for the title may be the reason the board decides they would rather get someone new in before the new season. I will agree with any decision the board makes as I have always done

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the supporters, the players, and the backroom staff for their support and effort over the years, and it will remain a regret of mine to have not delivered at least one title to the fans. We have been close on numerous occasions. 4 Semi finals and the year we finished 3 points off the title will haunt me for many years to come but perhaps one day I will return. The club remains in a fantastic position, with an excellent crop of players, and i will remain proud of the squad building programme we had in place during my tenure at the club

I can't imagine leaving a club like Arsenal, let alone a club as high as that in the league.
The very best of luck wherever you go.
Terry.

Milan target unbeaten silverwear double finish

A slight victory over struggling Roma and not the best performance, was the result more important than the performance today?

It wasnt a great game and we looked a bit flat so maybe we need to switch things about for the next game.  The win was of paramount importance today so im delighted with the points.   Despite Roma struggling they do have some quality players and have given us a good game both times we have played.

A lot of teams dropped points today, is the league title still something you are aiming for?

Of course we are, this is a very tough league but I have no doubt that if we won our remaining games we will win the league and Italian cup.  Its  a big ask but its what we have to aim for and we will do our best to bring silverwear back to Milan.  Everything is still to play for but we need to up our game and make sure we take as many points as possible.

Do you expect any signings before the deadline day?

No, we are selling a fringe player as part of a previous deal but  I dont expect anyone else to leave or come in.  If we can get a midfielder on loan we will but the chances are slim.

Finally Simon of Arsenal, a known friend of yours has offered his resignation at Arsenal, is this a surprise to you?

Its not a surprise because things havent gone well this season and Simon is a man of great pride and we all know he loves Arsenal.  I have no doubt that if he could have stayed a bit longer than he would have turned things around but the pressure was mounting.  One thing is for sure is that whoever takes over will reap the benefits of Simons work.  Simon is a great manager and I would love to see him come to Italy to manage.  I of course wish him all the best for his future.

So would a return to England with Arsenal interest you?

No not at all, my work is with Milan and im fully committed to that.   I do believe however that Mark Carrot Gayleozzie  of Real Mallorca would be ideal for the role.  He has a great flair in the transfer market  and maybe he can getting them firing again but that for arsenal to decide.

Ascoli 1-0 Torino

5 Wins in a row makes next game against Udinese a 6 pointer

Ascoli made it four wins in a row against bottom side Torino who gave a good account of themselves but like the majority of the season lacked that cutting edge to cause any damage going upfront Ascoli took the lead after just a minute of play Fabian Delph on Loan From Inter Milan played a brilliant through ball into the path of Francesco Marigliano who had been in the wildernees and hadn't played for about 6 games but started today and tucked the ball beyond the keeper to give Ascoli a great start and whilst they created a few more chances that proved to be the decisive goal

Sky Sports got to talk to Ascoli Manager Jonny Sinclair after the match

Jonny another win that makes it five in a row what do you believe the reason for the change of fortune as 5-6 games ago you were languishing in 8th and now you're 3rd.

Well I believe selling some my quality youth players for some experienced players has helped we now have a good mixture of youth players and some loan players in Michele De Blessis and Bastien Schweinsteiger have really given us an edge in midfield that we were lacking and are strike force most teams would do anything to have them

You've got a crunch game against 2nd place Udinese who are still 4 points ahead of you in the table after they beat Reggina is it fair to say it's a 6 pointer

I believe it's fair to say it is a 6 pointer if lose Udinese will be 7 points clear of us and I don't think be able to catch that with so few games left but if we win we'd only be 1 point off them and with the confidence we'd get from that match it would really give us an amazing chance of getting automatic promotion we want to end up 2nd by the end of the season not 3rd

Francesco Marigliano got the goal against Torino but just a day later he has gone out on loan to Napoli can you tell us the reason behind it?

Yes Francesco hasn't played for about 6-7 games now due to Amuari, Freddy Kanoute and James Vaughan who have all been performing well but today's game Freddy Kanoute and Amuari need to regain some of their fitness so Francesco got his chance and he took it well but for the next few games Francesco still wouldn't have got many games Napoli were interested in taking him on loan and that gets him some much needed game time so he has gone there and he can try and get them back into the play-offs

That's all we have time for sadly but thanks again Jonny for sharing some time with us

No problem guys, Thanks a lot
