BTO - Thoughts Wanted?

Hi Guys

Been a bit busy recently so the last few weeks havent seen the return of BTO. But to be honest - no-one seems to have noticed or asked for it back - does that point to a loss of interest?

Personally I dont want to see the demise of it and can normally find the time to squeeze it in during the week - but are people bored of it? If you look at how many people actually posted bets the last few weeks it is well down on normal

So is this

1. People have taken their eye of the ball as my updates have been sporadic recently?

2. People are bored with it or the current format?

3. People arent bothered really if it stays or goes?

It seems to me to be the same few people enjoying it (SAJ, myself, Tony, Mark, Luke and a few others im sure ive forgotten). Some people go crazy at the start and blow all their money and that is natural (stupid perhaps, but natural!) - but we can bring things in to invovle those people. What gets me down is the sudden drop in interest about 4/5 weeks in. Im open to ideas on how to keep interest up over the season, but only on the proviso that it doesnt let you off the hook for making stupidly ambitious bets. I wont want to end up punishing those that plan carefully to win the whole thing to be oddly punished by the people that can take bigger risks and come back in - if that makes sense

Anyway the engine allows for a lot of flexibility in terms of ods on the match and correct scores etc - perhaps I could even build a database of players and have "correct goalscorers" bets etc on a reduced amount of games rather than the current format

So this is an open forum to get all ideas in so they can be checked with view to kicking off a better version next season

Id also like to hear from current players if they want it to return the back end of this season (I expect Simon J to say yes to this!)

cheers all

Simon

I do not have a problem with BTO except I do seem to lose my money very quickly.
I don't say too much, and I am sure others are the same, because it is like criticising you when you are busy. You might reply "Well you do it."
It would be like me asking Rich when will the results be ready. We know he has a lot on and we have to be patient. I am very pleased you undertake the job.
Iam interested in carrying on in the same format.

While I am on I could say where is the FAFF gone?

I appreciate that Tez, but im pretty much "inoffensensible" and have pretty thick skin so people can always complain. I certainly would never take offence if someone asked when they were up this week for instance - and never mind a sarcastic remake or two as most people know by now.............. :)

I guess im trying to gauge interest really. My time and getting it up more regular is easilly fixed, especially as Mark (who heps run the results for me) is always offering to help if im busy that week

cheers

ps cant help you with FAFF as thats run by Simon Jenkins. And thats paid for by users whereas BTO isnt so you are far more welcome to insult its late running lol................:)

what about a max and min betting limit each week - it could be something like:

Min - 5% of cash balance
Max - 25%  of cash balance

This would stop people losing all there money in one week.

It would be better as a percentage limit rather than cash limit as it would reward people who are more successful with there bets, as they would be able to progressively bet more money than the less successful gamblers.

It would encourage people to bet every week as they would lose the 5% min even if no bet is placed

It would stop people winning prize money by just never betting and watching everyone else go bust as was the case for the Championship in the 1st Season of BTO I think.

I also still like the idea of secret bets (sent to an e-mail address) to stop copy bets and the strategic mirroring of close rivals bets as was seen quite a lot last season.

I would be more than happy to take this on as it would be really easy to manage.

Reading through Mark's comments above I must say I agree with all of them especially the idea of secret bets because if you top the leaderboard after a couple of weeks all you really have to do to stay at the top is to copy your rivals bets.

Also regarding losing some of the prize money if you do not place a bet I would like to see that raised to 50 % personally but with each person allowed to use 2 excemptions each season a bit like lifelines.

Maybe we could also introduce an idea of being able use a double your money lifeline twice in a season as well with managers being able to use the lifeline at any point in the season.

I'm not too fussed about changing the format of BTO. If it were introduced I don't think I'd bet on 'goalscorer' bets or other things because I like just going for the winner/loser of matches. I also don't mind if it comes back for the rest of the season. Although if it doesn't I expect to be given my winnings still!!! lol

I don't really like the idea of minimum and maximum bets though. I like the freedom to spend what I want and similarly I don't like the idea of a double money lifeline and that's a very odd suggesting. Too many chefs spoil the broth.

I'm also not bothered about secret betting. Despite being disgracefully cheated last season I personally don't look at anyone else's bets I only look at the top two posts which say the odds and how much money I have. I then browse everyone else's after I've posted mine.

FAFF is still running but I've been doing my A-Level exams over January and February which means I didn't have time to go through the razzmatazz of trying to get all the info up on the messagboard (for some reason I can't and I don't want to keep having to get Richard to put them up for me). And in the most recent couple of weeks there have been mid-week cup games and the restarting of my real-life football season after the winter break which has clogged my time up too. I'll put everyone's positions and total scores up now and then I'll post the individual player score breakdown and the scoreboard with each team's total goals/assists etc.

Cheers

Simon

PS. Kudos to Newcs for being the first person on FA to call me saj. He lost it a bit later by gradually getting more and more formal and ending up at Simon Jenkins. lol

I dont really have any opinion on this lol

I enjoy it how it is and like the ideas mentioned.

Although only one I wouldnt do is the secret betting, sounds a bit of a hassle

I would like to see BTO return even if it costs me second place to you sim lol, think people have been quiet due to the GF op so not giving you hassles due to real life situations.

I think the format is spot on as it is, ok so yeah some people do copy bet but think the majority do look at the odds of games... then look at league tables, squads to see who is out etc before placing bets well i do anyway not sure it always works in my favour (after all im bottom of the prem so what do i know about team selection lol)

I do think maybe an introduction of a rule that says if you do not bet for say 4 weeks then you are automatically made bankrupt or money halfed, this can cover then for holidays, extended breaks and internet problems, and still allows people to carry on after if they so wish or risk money being halfed again 4 weeks later thus eventually being bottom with no chance of picking up any winnings

I'm sure I remember something about punishments for not betting for a couple of weeks. Wasn't it at the end of season 1 of BTO where people were close to getting money for staying on £200?

...Or was that just a dream?!

i like the idea of min and max betting

i think the reason no one has asked where it has gone has already been said no one wanted to put pressure on you with the op on your gf going on

i think you should get help with bto cause if your not about to do it that means there is no bto that week where if you had someone they could do it if you wasn't about

would be a real shame to lose this

Also betting twice on the same team should change!

Newcs, to be fair me and you are the main culprits for that lol. We should probably go into gardening because we're so good at hedging our bets rofl.gif
