Posted this on another board, but they're doing shocking and best has 3/7. I saw a few of these elsewhere and have added to them.
The situations that ask for an answer and reason, you need both to get the point for that situation. See how many you'd get right...
Situation 1:
Jay Bothroyd wants to change his boots and quickly leaves the field of play to do so without asking the referee. Seconds later Newcastle score a goal through Carroll but was it offside? And which line is the offside line?
Situation 2:
Gutierrez scores a second goal for Newcastle and runs to celebrate in front of his fans. He pulls out a Spiderman mask and puts it on. Carroll is there thumping his badge and Alan Smith lifts the front of his shirt over his head, but doesn't remove his shirt fully. All three are now celebrating off the field of play behind a corner flag. Who should be booked and why?
Situation 3:
Capaldi throws the ball into the box and it bounces twice before going into the back of the Newcastle net untouched. Is it: A ) A retaken Cardiff throw B ) A Newcastle throw from the original position C ) A Cardiff goal D ) A Newcastle goal kick E ) A Cardiff corner kick F ) A Newcastle indirect free kick G ) A Newcastle direct free kick
Situation 4:
Capaldi is at it again. He throws the ball back to Marshall from a throw in and Marshall totally misses the ball when trying to clear, the ball rolling into the back of the net. Is it: A ) A retaken Cardiff throw B ) A Newcastle throw from the original position C ) A Newcastle goal D ) A Cardiff goal kick E ) A Newcastle corner kick F ) A Newcastle indirect free kick G ) A Newcastle direct free kick
Situation 5:
Cardiff are under pressure, Gerrard has the ball at his feet. He flicks the ball up and heads the ball back to Marshall. Marshall goes to pick the ball up but instead kicks it away quickly to avoid Carroll charging in. Pick one and explain why:
A ) Play on B ) Book Carroll and award Cardiff an indirect free kick C ) Book Carroll and award Cardiff a direct free kick D ) Book Gerrard and award Newcastle an indirect free kick E ) Book Gerrard and award Newcastle a direct free kick F) Book Marshall and award Newcastle an indirect free kick G) Book Marshall and award Newcastle a direct free kick
Situation 6:
Chopra has just come on as a substitute. Which of these can he immediately take and why:
A ) A corner, goal kick, throw in, free kick, penalty B ) A corner, throw in, penalty C) A goal kick, throw in, free kick D) A goal kick, free kick, penalty E) A corner, goal kick, free kick, penalty F ) A goal kick, throw in, free kick, penalty
Situation 7:
How long can a goalkeeper hold onto the ball for?
A ) 5 seconds B ) 6 seconds C) 7 seconds D) 8 seconds E) 9 seconds F ) 10 seconds
I'll give it a go, i'm actually a qualified ref (only Level 7 though at present) so it will be interesting to see if i actually do ok!
Situation 1
Carroll is not offside. Bothroyd did not get permission to leave the field of play and is therefore considered active, hence the offside line will be at position D. He should also be cautioned for leaving the FOP without ref's permission.
Situation 2
I'm not sure on this one. I think that normally the most serious offenced is punished, but its confusing as they are all similar. I think Gutierrez would be booked for producing a mask (and wearing it!), you dont have to take your shirt off to be booked, over the head is enough to get punished so Smith should get booked, and Carroll's gesture would be provocative so i would book them all!!
Situation 3
A goal cant be scored directly from a throw-in, so i would assume that it is a goal kick to Newcastle. (D)
Situation 4
Again, a goal cannot be scored directly from a throw in (be it a goal or an own goal i think), so it would be a corner kick to Newcastle. (E)
Situation 5
Charging is an offence but it depends on the referee's interpretation as to whether its in a dangerous manner or not. If the goalkeeper has chosen to kick the ball away then i would just play on. (A)
Situation 6
Once a substitute has been made, the player has all the powers of a normal player so i believe he is eligible to take anything. (A)
Situation 7
6 Seconds (B)

1, because Bothroyd is off the pitch and not interfering with the play. I remember that from seeing it happen in a Euro 08 game on TV.
Situation 2:
Gutierrez, if that's not an over the top celebration I dont know what is!
Situation 3:
A, Surely no matter how many bounces the ball takes, you cannot score from a throw without someone touching it or else Stoke would've tried?
Situation 4:
C, they deserve it to be.
Situation 5:
A, I don't really see what's wrong with this?
Situation 6:
A, not sure about the goal kick, but people come on as subs and take the rest of them.
Situation 7:
C, had there not been any choices I would have said as long as the referee deemed an acceptable amount of time. Surely the ref doesn't start counting in his head every time a goalie picks it up? I bet hardly any refs abide by this rule (if it exists, is it a trick question?). For some reason C jumps out at me.
1). D because bothroyd is off the pitch when he shouldn't there is no offside no matter how far up the pitch you are
2). Smith removing the shirt even a little is a yellow card offence because they introduced the shirt rule because women were getting them becuase it showed their bra's off so they enforced the rule for men as well so it wasnt sexist
3). A usually when you take and it doesn't come into play you either re take the throw or give the other team the ball in this case i believe a simple retake of the throw in is in order
4). B Usually when you take a throw and it doesn't come into play you either re take the throw or give the other team the throw so I imagine this situation is a little different though as its there own net so I' give the throw in to Newcastle
5). C charging is dangerous yellow card free kick simples! (don't actually know just presuming)
6). E I presume you'd be able to take them all i know you can take penalties and free kicks as soon as you come on not sure about the other tbh I'll go for D as I imagine if a gk gets injured the sub gk would automatically be able to take a goal kick I'll plump for E
7). B That one I didn't guess!

1) B because Jay is still active 2) Gutierez would be booked because he instigated the first offence 3) A - Retaken Cardiff Throw On 4) C - Newcastle Goal remember Enckelman for Aston Villa 5) Play On - nothing was wrong 6) E - but I am not sure about that one 7) B - 6 seconds
Normally I prefer to criticise referees rather than try to understand them - but here goes:
1. Bothroyd gets a booking because players are not allowed to leave the field of play without the permission of an official, to do so is a bookable offence. Not sure how accurate your blobs are but from the diagram I would say that the offside line in A. This is because Bothroyd is not on the field of play and so is inactive, this means that unless the ball is played on by a Cardiff player on its way to Carroll - then Carroll is offside (so no goal).
2. You can be booked for delaying the restart of the game - but this is at the officials descretion. Booked for removing your shirt as part of a celebration, including putting it over your head without fully removing it. Or for inciting fans - your own or the opposition. Or for leaving the field during a celebration e.g. jumping into the crowd.
Guitierez may or may not be booked according to the referees descretion. If it was in front of the opposing fans I would book him for incitement (I recall some south American getting sent off for this ....Salinas?....in some local derby- the type where people get shot!). As it is front of his own fans I would take no action ....Sava who used to play for Fulham did this a lot...well a bit, as he didn't score all that often!
Caroll the same- referees discretion but as in front of own fans probably leave it.
Smith gets a booking because putting your shirt over your head is considered the same as removing it. I remember Cahill being booked for this against Man City years ago. It was his second yellow and he was the first player in Britain to be sent off for a goal celebration following the rule changes.
Technically all three could be booked if they extend the celebration to a point where the ref thinks they are delaying the restart, but in that case it is usually only the scorer who is booked as he started the celebration, unless one of the celebrators carries on once the others have all indicated they are ready to restart the match.
3. D. A Newcastle goal kick.
4. E. Newcastle corner kick. I think in the Enckleman incident mentioned by Martin he had actually touched the ball slightly.
5. This is A - play on. Carroll isn't guilty of anything other than running about as he makes no contact. Gerrard isn't guilty of a backpass because that's only an infringement if you pass it back with your foot and the keeper picks it up. Marshall isn't guilty of anything because he going to pick it up isn't an infringement even for a back pass unless he actually touches it with his hands.
6. Substitutes can only enter play after the referee has been informed a substitution is to be made and then there is a break in play. So if the referee had been informed and then there was the break in play Chopra is legally on the pitch and he can do anything the other players can.
7. B. 6 seconds, at refs discretion rather than an official count.
"Any defending player leaving the field of play for any reason without the referees permission shall be considered to be on his own goal line or touch line for the purposes of offside until the next stoppage in play."
Situation 2: Gutierrez and Smith booked.
Gutierrez "A player must be cautioned if - he covers his head or face with a mask or other similar item" Smith "A player must be cautioned if - he removes his shirt or covers his head with his shirt" Carroll "Leaving the fi eld of play to celebrate a goal is not a cautionable offence"
Situation 3: D ) A Newcastle goal kick
"If the ball enters the opponents goal directly from a throw-in, the referee must award a goal kick."
Situation 4: E ) A Newcastle corner kick
"If the ball enters the throwers own goal directly from a throw-in, the referee must award a corner kick."
Situation 5: D ) Book Gerrard and award Newcastle an indirect free kick
"Bookings: uses a deliberate trick while the ball is in play to pass the ball to his own goalkeeper with his head, chest, knee etc. in order to circumvent the Law, irrespective of whether the goalkeeper touches the ball with his hands or not. The offence is committed by the player in attempting to circumvent both the letter and the spirit of Law 12 and play is restarted with an indirect free kick" Therefore booked for intent of unsporting behaviour.
Situation 6: D ) A goal kick, free kick, penalty
"A subtitute can't take a corner or a throw-in to restart after he has just come on, but he is allowed to take a free-kick penalty or goal-kick. The reasoning behind it, is that if he takes the throw-in or corner he has technically not come onto the pitch before he has touched the ball."
