week 13

First win for Fiorentina but there is still a lot more to do.

This week former Italian giants Fiorentina finally won a game at the 12th attempt. They proved too strong for a Catania side that have been lacking in confidence the last few weeks after a very promising start to the season. Manager Amilcar Vasquez finds his club one off the bottom in the form league with only 1 point in the last 5 games that is something he will want to change and fast if he is to keep the club in Seria A for next season. Next week both clubs face very difficult games as Fiorentina travel to Juventus while Catania make the trip to Milan to face AC.

Lazio shell shocked as Juve run riot.

In what was always going to be a very tough game, Lazio played host to Juventus in a repeat of last seasons cup quarter final and like last season the result ended up being the same.  Lazio looked like they were keeping Juventus at bay until the 74th minute then the old lady took control scoring 6 goals in the last 16 minutes.  The result will not have hurt Lazio too much though as I would have guessed they would have had this game down as a loss since the fixtures came out. Juventus will be happy to build up their goal difference as that could be the difference between finishing 1st and 2nd this season.

6 of the best for Ascoli.

Quite a few people had predicted that this was going to be a very tough game for Atalanta against Ascoli but I dont think many would have seen this coming. Ascoli inflected the worst league defeat on manager Dale Price in his whole management career. News out of Atalanta is that an administrative error is being blamed for the result. Price was heard saying, We have had some trouble with staff that work on the administrative side of the club but that has been taken care of now. Some people lost their jobs over the mistake but I can assure fans that it will never happen again. Ascoli remain 3 points clear of their closest rivals Reggina and look well on course to get a top 2 finish and a place in Seria A.

Tick tock tick tock for Siena

Another week and another week out of the play-offs for Siena and their manager Terry Manifold. This week they lost to Sampdoria a result that wasnt a shock but with Torino winning they now find themselves 3 points behind them in the table. Next week Terry will be looking to follow in Torinos footsteps by beating Udinese. With pressure mounting on Terry and his staff, all eyes will be fixed on that game next week to see if they can get back in the play-off race.

Siena  News

The Siena manager, Terry Manifold, was back on the training ground this morning even though it was a Bank Holiday. Sienas next match is an away match against Udinese and as the season progresses each match is becoming critical.

PRESS

That wasn't a great result against Samdoria was it?

TERRY

No, I can't say it was a great result but I did not honestly think we could a win on Friday. Samdoria are a very good side and I think we played some good football and it wasn't completely one-sided.

PRESS

Your position here must be under threat?

TERRY

The only pressure here is the one I put myself under. The Chairman is not on my back yet, but he is aware of my plans for the rest of the season. Admittedly we have dropped out of the play off position but my plan has always been to keep in touch and make a push from the halfway point. We have reached that point and have the Samdoria match behind us. I am looking for 3 points next week and at least 4 points from the Reggina and Chievo games. That is a target of 7 points from the next three matches.

PRESS

Are you looking for other players to achieve that?

TERRY

Yes I am hoping to bring in two young strikers, on loan, from next week, and I am sure they are going to make a massive difference to the front line.

PRESS

Are you still convinced that promotion is a possibility?

TERRY

I would not be standing here if the season was all but over. I would be out there  looking for a job.

Jonny Sinclair was speaking to the media after a disappointing 2-0 defeat when injuries and suspensions cost Parma dearly.

We didn't play are best game but considering the injuries and suspensions we did well we could only name two defenders for the game and now one of them is injured which is not helping our cause at the minute. We did well to only concede two today I'm proud of the boys.

With Fiorentina and Inter Milan winning in recent games are you worried that you'll slip into the bottom three soon?

Of course are main aim is to stay in the league and establish ourselves as a Seria A team again we need are best players available to help get up the league table again and at the minute it just isn't happening. It's going to be tough but i believe we have the players to keep us in this division.

With the injuries and suspensions can be seeing any future signings at all?

We are trying desperately to get in a striker Ginaluca is doing brilliantly but i don't want to be heavily reliant on a 16 year old learning the game also we need a right back and a centre back we might get Manuel Biondi back which would be brilliant but that's up to Ray and what he sees fit is best for Lazio we've been trying to get people on loan and they would rather send them to loan divisions when really it would be better to experience in a better league? I really don't understand that.

Any news on Nemanja Covic and where his future lies?

Well we gave him a chance on loan as at the start of the season he was 4th choice we had Howson Maric and Pellechia and he has done brilliantly in Villareal and I'm pleased him and Elipold have been getting games and i'd like to thanks to Dave for that Nemanja is going to be a quality player and we don't to lose him we're not looking to sell him I know Dave is keen on signing him permanently but Nemanja has a bright future and I only see that future being at Parma for many more years to come.

Do you now regret letting him out on loan?

Yes and no. Yes because of the shortage of strikers and lack of goals has been are main issue this season. No in the sense he is playing every week in a winning side he is scoring for fun and he is only ever going to benefit from the experience he is getting at Villareal.

Ok thanks for time.

No problem cheers.

Davies wants to commit his future to Bolton Wanderers

The Welsh manager  has had a up and down time at The Trotters, but is hoping to cement a play-off place.

Daviess current deal runs out at the end of this season, only earning a new contract depending on results.

Now the former Charlton and Udinese manager wants to commit his long term future to the club, expanding into a further developed youth academy, bigger stadium and an all round squad able to compete weekly in the Premier League.

He added 'Bolton has given me a better chance than any other team Ive managed, I have developed some great connections with fellow managers in helping the team to reinstate the clubs high profile, I genuinely do believe that will be achieved, with a little extra time.'

Siena  News

The Siena manager, Terry Manifold, was more than pleased with the win against Udinese at the weekend and is still optimistic about the team's prospects this year.

PRESS  Although you won it didnt look as easy as it looked on paper?

TERRY  No, I can't say it was easy but Kevin Smith managed to get the goal that mattered and he also hit the crossbar 3 times in the second half. You do need an element of luck to support the team's performance.

PRESS   I see that you have let Rickler go?

TERRY  Yes that was unfortunate but I have a few irons in the fire and I needed the money from the sale to start the process. Rickler is a good team member and I hope I am not going to regret the decision. You will see a little movement on both the loan and transfer front this weekend. I did say last week that I have 2 strikers coming in on loan to really give us that promotion edge. The transfer will see an experienced defender coming in to re-enforce the back line. The downside is I have to release Emanuele Oriandi as part of the deals and that does not give me any pleasure at all. As the manager these decisions have to be taken and I have to stick my neck out sometimes. Getting my head chopped off is the risk I am taking.

PRESS  I have never seen you look so thrilled at staff movements.

TERRY  Well I see the future is a little more optimistic with the movements over the next 2 weeks. I did tell you last week that I was looking for 7 points from the next 3 matches and last weekend was a good start. This weekend we have Reggina and that will not be easy.

PRESS  Are you still convinced that promotion is a possibility?

TERRY  We have every chance. If you look at the run in for this league Siena have what I see as the kindest program out of the play off prospects. We have a really good chance, we need to take that chance.

Cadiz manager Iain Kochanowski speaks to the press after the latest game against Gimnastic

Your second win in a row, you must be pleased?

"I am delighted with the results of late. The lads are really beginning to gel and are putting in good performances as well."

"When I first arrived the team struggled to make any chances but now they are competing well with teams and getting more chances. I am really enjoying my time at Cadiz. The chairman leaves me to get on with it and I am confident that I can win the fans round. I know they were upset about their former manager leaving but it is up to me to help them forget."

How do you see the next game against Osasuna going?

"It is an important game for us if we are to continue our good run and get into the play off places. It will be a tough match but is one we are capable of winning. John Cofie is returning to us from Man Utd this week and I ma hoping he will carry on where he left off by getting in amongst the goals again."

Are there any other players coming in?

"Denis Naki will also be coming back from Aston Villa. I have built up a good relationship with Martin at Villa so he is willing to loan his young players to us in return for games and experience. A win win situation for both. After that I have no immediate plans to get any players in though I am always open to improvement."

Finally, we were suprised that you let Craig Lindfield leave last week. Any comments on that transfer?

"Craig was a good servant to the club but I felt that we needed an experience midfielder to help Joaquim Millan learn his trade. Also, as John Cofie was returning I was able to let Craig rejoin his former manager at Wolves."

Coakleys FA Corner

Reading 0 Bolton 4

Bolton dominated a game which many believe had draw written all over it.   Before this game both teams had drawn more game than they had won both having drawn 4 games each.   If not a draw then it was certainly going to be a tight game, how wrong we all were.    The early signs werent positive and it took 41 minutes for the game to spark into life with Olsen getting the game going.  From this point Bolton never looked back scoring a further three times to make it Ashley Davies biggest win of the season and push Bolton into a solid play/off place.

Coakleys corner
I was delighted for Ashley (Bolton manager), he has had some hard times but he has been patient and is now reaping the rewards.  He has a couple of good loans that will keep the club going this season.  I hope they make the play/offs as it would be great for the club but the other clubs in and around the play/offs have plenty of quality so it will be tough for him.

Newcastle 3 Man City 1

What many fans classed as a 6 pointer ended in disaster for Manchester City who now find themselves 7 points behind Newcastle.  Man City took the lead on 7 minutes after a bright start with Semshov smashing the ball into the back of the net.  However Newcastle soon dominated hitting back three times and finishing the game in the first 45minutes.  Newcastle continued to create chances throughout the game but failed to convert in the second half.  The pressure is certainly on Manchester City manager Simon Newcombe for resting so many players in such a huge game.

Coakley corner

In my opinion that result all but relegates Manchester City, Newcastle have added well recently to the team and Leicester are getting stronger.  I am amazed at the team Simon put out to face Newcastle in what i would have thought is the biggest game of the season.  No Vidic, Mexes, Kaka, Mido, these players are the difference, they played against me (Cardiff) and got them a point.  If they had played today Manchester Citys chances would have improved massively

Coakleys Cardiff Corner

Liverpool 3 Cardiff 0

A massively one sided game finished with a comprehensive win for current champions Liverpool.  In truth the score flattered Cardiff who failed to get a shot on or off target in 90 minutes.   Cardiff took the opportunity to rest key players ahead of what Luke Coakley calls more winnable games.  Although no win in 4 league games will have Cardiff fans concerned especially with there drop out of the top 6 euro places.  Liverpool on the other hand will be pleased to keep up the pressure on Chelsea despite the 5 point gap.

Coakleys comments:

The result was an expected result, we have some very tough fixtures coming up  but they are a tad more winnable if we are at our best.   Our squad is a small squad and to continue in Europe and make sure we are in a position to push into Europe through the league positions calculated risks needed to be made with the choice of players.   Results of late have been disappointing but I have full faith in the players and believe we will start to hit form at the right time and gain our goal.   We wish Liverpool all the best for the rest of the season
