It is with some sadness that I have to say Football Academy Evolution will be finishing at the end of its 10th season. As some of you already know my current job is changing as come September I'm going on a PGCE teaching course for a year, then into teaching after that hopefully. I realistically can see no way I'll have very much spare time left over for the next year and so some things just had to give, and Football Academy is one of them.
Football Academy, in its Evolution form, has had just as good a run as the original game, both lasted a long time, and in truth maybe longer than I expected. Football Academy started being designed way back all of 9 years ago, so I hope you'll agree its certainly had a decent run. Some of you have joined more recently, quite a few of you have been here to see out the 4-5 years of Football Academy Evolution, and a select group of maybe 10 managers have been in the game since the first couple of seasons of the original Football Academy, so that is some commitment to the game!! Walter Hsu, William Hsu, Steve Jenkins and Simon Jenkins were all managers in the game during the original games first season and have managed non stop with no breaks out of the game.
The reason the announcement is now, is because the transfer window is shut so no one can make any silly "I dont care what happens to my team now" deals, plus most of the games are out the way. People still involved this Friday in matches will play their final competitive match for pride of winning that last trophy.
There will be matches on this weekend if you want to play a final friendly game against anyone in the game. Just submit a team, with who you want to play in the comments box.
One big thing about FA has been the great core users who have come from various areas but have all got on well together here and hopefully there will be some lasting friendships out of it all. If people are interested in finding things to keep doing together I can suggest a few options. Obviously some of you came from Mystify as I did myself. Mystify is another management game for those not aware and Wayne is a good guy that runs it, although personally I'm not managing there anymore as I found the changes weren't to my liking but its a good community there.
Another option if Football Identity which is a game I posted about before. You take a player/manager/journalist through their career, training them and playing turn based matches against other players. This game is very big in countries like Brazil, Sweden, Norway, and actually has a large number of Brits on there as well. If you do have a go at this, I'm still on this game so send me a message and I'll be able to help. Also I know a few FIFA people were trying to set up a league for that, perhaps a summer league, although I think pricey is sorting that out so you might want to send him a message about it.
The message board will remain active for a while, I'm unlikely to admin it forever so at some point it'll close but for the time being feel free to use it to organise other things as I've just mentioned, to keep groups of you together.
Thanks once again for everyones time, support, and commitment to the game. It's been a pleasure!!
Well its the news I thought might be coming, but had hoped would not be the case.
What a shame, Ive enjoyed playing and will miss it. Unlike other management games this was just the right sort of size, and was very playable.
Mystify I have played but the transfer market was not realistic and it is just too big. Soccermanager I am on but it is not as good. And Football Identity is not flexible enough. Oh well.....
Thank you Richardd for all your work over all the years. The game will be sorely missed.
Just like to say a massive thank you and well done to Rich for running a fantastic game. I have had a lot of fun on FA and it is all down to his tremendously hard work.
This is one game that had the timing, involvment and a really great group of players. It got very addictive at times and it did keep you totally involved.
What are we going to do?
I have tried other games such as Mystify. I agree the changes have spoilt it.
There are others but none have that personal touch. I am surprised there is no-one out there wanting to take it over.
I am in Online Football Manager. the difference there is that you can put money in. The game does not get anywhere near this one.
I wish you all the best for the future. I am sure you will succeed at whatever you do. Thank you.
Personally have been invovled since the last few seasons of the original FA. The things that have stood out for me that have made the game that much different from its competition:
1. Ability to hold dialogue with the game owner, suggest improvements, have them listened to, and year on year, actioned to the benefit of the game 2. The players themselves, long standing and new alike soon got to grips with an informal code of ethics, and the banter and interaction via media, PMs, title / relegation battles was excellent 3. Side games / polls / long message board chains - rarely to the players get so invovled in the game they are playing (aside from that mad Canadian guy longer term users will remember, who for want of a better word, was a complete $*$*!) 4. The sheer volume of work and time spent by Rich updating the engine / the game mechanics / weekly results etc - it never went unappreciated
Will miss it - but look forward to not thinking about it so much which was probably dangerous to ones health anyway! :)
I would like to echo everybody elses comments and say a big thanks to Rich for all his effort over the past years, FA Evo is a major success and it's a massive shame to see it finish. Thanks to Pricey for running the prediction league also. I play three online manager games and this is by far the most addictive. All the best of luck to Rich though on your teaching course, i hope you teach them all about football management!

Just to say also one of the games i am on is soccer manager, its very simple to understand and although there is not as much interaction between managers its quite competitive with league games twice a week plus a cup game (if you're still in it!), i play in English Championship 1939 and there are lots of decent team managerless so come join in would be good to get some managers from here all in the same league.

Thats really sad. this is one of the top 5 bookmarks i kept.. maybe my future wife will be happy but only her.. lol! Im also on soccer manager guys.. add me in
Thanks for the kind words guys. As I said in the top post, a big part of this game was the core of users it kept so you all helped make it what it was.
Soccer Manager I found seems to be weighted towards Gold Members, although I'm sure we could organise a game on there of just FA players.
I'd also like to say thanks to Rich for the work put into the game (if I had know it was the last season I would have accepted one of the offers i received for Henri Lansbury )
I find this quite simple to say, awesome game, awesome managers and for someone to take the time to make the gameplay as interactive as it has been is sensational.
If anyone is interested I have rejoined Mystify and am managing Troyes in French League 1 although no other teams are available in the French top league.
I have also been on soccermanager.com for a while - 2 teams
Wolfsburg in league 35535 - and Sunderland in league 36302
Rich, would you consider letting somebody else take it over?
Possibly. It would be a section of the game, the engine, teams, key parts like that. The extra parts like chairmen etc would have to be cut to get the file small enough to move. I'd also need to write up an instruction manual for running it. I'd also look to sell it on. This cost would be able to be recovered by the new admin via donations however it would 1 - stop someone taking it then realising it involves some effort each week and giving up, 2 - would ensure at least a few more seasons for the other managers while the new admin recouped their costs, 3 - would be a return for the original idea behind FA, that there are online footy game engines available free on the web (3 versions) but everyone uses them as they're widely available, I wanted one no one had ever used, so whoever took it on would be getting an engine designed from scratch that no one had ever seen or run before but me. It would also take me a while to put a detailed manual together that gave step by step guides to running every part of it (to make it as clear, or "fool" proof as possible!!)
If someone was serious about running it in the future, unlike the previous original FA, I wouldn't rule out passing it over. The way it works you need very little computer knowledge, the manual would guide you through the basics to run it, as long as you didn't try and go editing the mechanics of the engine it'd work fine on its own.
If anyone was to take it over, I'd suggest cutting a lot of the stuff out so its just basic matches, teamsheets and transfers untill its proper up and running.
I'd like to say my thanks to Rich for the time and effort of FA it definately is the best football management game out there my Parma team were just starting to develop as well but good luck to Rich in his teaching course!
The only problem I had with the game was Cardiff being in the Premiership and Norwich in League One wasn't very realistic to be honest ;)
Along with the rest of the messages, thanks to Rich for the work he's put in to make this game as successful and enjoyable for myself as well as everybody else. Hopefully it will carry on, shame to lose ut after all this time...
