I normally look at setting up any changes I'll be making in the second half of seasons so they're ready to be included come the end of season. The main thoughts for the next improvements is giving managers something else to spend money on other than players. You'll all finds at times the transfer market gets so that no matter what money you have players just aren't available. I'd like an option where managers can invest money into the club rather than just the team, and this would increase the worth of money in the game so that hopefully money becomes as important if not more so than playersd.
So my initial question is; what would you like to spend your clubs money on? These have to be easily included into the way the game works, and each alternative needs a specific effect where higher investment brings you higher rewards.
Suggestions could be along the lines of youth facilities, stadiums, training pitches, and so on.
On top of this, any other suggestions are welcomed but follow the following two points:
- Don't think of things that will just benefit you. If you're a parent/feeder club don't just ask for more loan spaces unless you have a reason why it would benefit everyone and would improve the game.
- Try to explain your suggestion as I said with the facilities idea above. Saying you want to be able to invest in youth facilities is great but not a developed idea. Say what the effects would be with the more money you put into it so it becomes a realistic idea.
Some ideas may take longer to work into the games set up. That doesn't mean bigger ideas aren't appreciated and often good ideas are stored and worked on over a season or two until I can fit them in with the way the game works.
Id like to see something comes in where clubs can add to there club balances by being active. Maybe a standard question could be asked each week by Richard and the best reply from each division gets a small media prize of £50 or 100k. Or even a set of standard questions that could be answered each week in the shape of a match day program, the quality could be decided by rich and the money given dependant on the quality, maybe up to £100k a week? Biggest problem might be that some leagues have very few active managers.
I like the idea of clubs being able to spend on the youth players. Maybe the more they spend building up there youth team the quicker the youth players will improve?

Whilst I am active on the messageboard, and so would be able to respond to the idea put forward by Luke of Man City, I play another game as well as this so dont spend my time 100% on this game. Other managers who are not active hardly at all would be penalised as a result of Lukes suggestion, and therefore I dont particularly like it.
Just an idea but perhaps you could spend money on a club shop, with certain items say shirts costing quite a lot to invest in but getting large returns depending on sales. You could influence sales through spending on advertising their sales.
A shop would give you a lot of options for spending with everything from mugs on sale through to more expensive items such as stadium tours. The more you spend on stocking the shop the more money you make. But perhaps some items would sell better than others so there is an elemnt of luck to it?
Most games I have played in the past include spending on things like groundsmen or scouts. If you dont pay a groundsman you end up having higher bills for pitch maintenance and possible fines for poor pitch quality. If you pay a scout perhaps you could choose or influence what youth players you get at half and end of season, or even have a section of players that you could buy but only those who pay get emailed the details - policing this may be a tricky one. Just a few ideas for you....
This is not really an idea specifically for season three but one i have thought could work well for a while.
I thought it may be good to have a gossip section on the message board, speculating on potential transfers.
It would possibly have a few benefits or tweaks to make the game slightly more realistic;
- Managers could leak deals to the press to attract other bidders or boost offers already on the table. - They could fabricate interest from other clubs to boost existing transfer bids. - It would encourage more people to take an active role in transfers and media activity (e.g. denying speculation or feigning speculation to entice a rival to splash more cash)
It would need to be run in conjunction with the media also, and whoever runs the column could take snippets from existing media, media could be sent in too them directly, or they could simply make something up.
I would definately volunteer to run the column, which could then be modirated by Rich, either on here or as a seperate freewebs site. It could also lead to conflicting media reports which would replicate the uncertainty of modern day transfer activity.
here is an example of what i mean;
'Gudjohnsen set for Sky Blues; Coventry manager Mark Rollings has set his sights on bringing the Icelandic international to the Ricoh arena, with Kevin Kyle a make weight (The Sun).
Interest in Sidwell high; Atletico Madrid manager Chris Hanton has revealed that there are five of six clubs interested in securing the services of Central midfielder Steve Sidwell with Liverpool and Chelsea apparantly among the front runners (Various).
United want Messi; The Manchester United boss has suggested he wants to bring superstar Lionel Messi to Old Trafford and has reportedly offered 22million for the Argentinian (The Guardian).
Arsenal coy on Owen; Although admitting interest in Newcastle striker Michael Owen the Arsenal boss has suggested he will not pay over 9million for the striker (The Sun).'
just to expand on JD's idea there - hows about the following
£5m buys your club a scout. £10m buys you a Cheif Scout
Every team has a pool of future youth players right? So hows about for this cash injection into the scouts - £5m buys you a choice of 2 players (and only if you are randomly assigned any for that period by the game engine) and £10m buys you the choice out of 3 possibles?
what do people think? some may object to the high cash amounts but i think the choice is quite important and so should carry a high price figure
I dont agree at all, those prices are way too high for most clubs.
Maybe introducing a draft system for youth players where the lower clubs get first choice, (like in american sport) with each team maybe paying a fee of 10% of there cash if they choose to have a youth player.
This way the richer/better clubs will not get even better & this will also cost each team an even proportion of their money.
personally i think that £2.5m + £5m are too cheap. I think any price should be comparable to at least the value of a half decent player
then each club makes the choice of how important it it to there club
or we could change the prices and split it down by league so that each club has a better chance of affording them? personally i dont like the idea as it just complicated things for Richard - keep it simple if you ask me!
anyway - this is a discusssion - so keep the ideas coming!!!
I dont mean to ruin the party, but I wouldn't do anything for the new season (except the idea of naming new youth players). If I wanted to play a game where all the stadiums and stuff could be customised then I would play FM! The current setup has been successful, so just keep it that way.
The general thinking at the moment is that I'll set up a donation scheme for next season. This year I finish uni and assume time will become more pressing then. As such I'll probably look to FA donations to keep it going. I'm reluctant to make it a pay to play game and I don't want donators to benefit hugely in the game as it would disadvantage people who didn't want to donate, but I'm looking at setting up a donation package.
I'm looking into the idea of foreign youth camps, and scouting abroad. This could see the re-introduction of the foreign player market in a different form.
At the moment I'm thinking that these features if introduced would be available to everyone but maybe a youth camp and scout are given for a season if the manager chooses to donate for that season. That way the donator benefits, but theres not a huge difference over non-donators.
It's all up in the air still, but I thought I'd add to this thread as I haven't for a while.
Also theres general ideas going round of something like media questions each week to make sure everyones active. Personally I'm against that. It adds to the time needed to play the game at the minimal level and is unecessary really. I know people not replying to emails can be annoying but its a part of any half decent online game. People's activity peaks and dips depending on their lives and some people just might not want to do any transfers. You just learn who they are and don't email them.
re Questions each week - My thinking behind this is the more managers are active the better the game and the more interest it brings. While I appreciate some managers don't have the time or don't want to use there time answering questions each week I do think the active managers should be slightly rewarded. The way I see it if you put a little more in then you should get a little more out. I think more managers would be tempted to do the questions once they see a slight reward and I think the game would receive a boost from it. The responses to each questions would im sure be used in other media. I really like the idea myself but its not everyones cup of tea.
re Managers and e-mails - it is annoying, very annoying in fact. It takes 2 seconds to answer an e-mail saying "yes" or "No". It even more annoying when I E-mail a manager asking about a player and then find he transfers a few weeks later. Ive e-mail managers asking about players yet I see the same teams players moving out on loan etc etc so clearly they are active just cant be bothered replying.
One other suggestion would be a time for results - not sure how possible this is with your schedule but would like to see a time when we can check results rather than having to go back and fore all the time. Example: Maybe move the team sheet deadline to Thursday 4pm and the say Results will be up Saturday 7pm. That gives plenty of time for you to sort everything out. Just an idea

The only change to the previous post is that the scout idea will take the shape of an updated Foreign Player Market. In that there will be a number of locations say North America, and managers can pay to have a scout in that area for 1 season. This allows them the chance to bid on players who come into that market at a set time - ie. a transfer window style period.
The cost for a scout can't be too much that lower clubs are always out priced, but maybe that top clubs can have a scout in every market while lower clubs have to pick one.
Also, tying this into the Donation idea. If a manager makes a donation at the start of a new season, then they can perhaps get one free scout as part of that package. That way it doesn't effect the clubs finances. This means active managers in say League One could donate and have a scout which maybe otherwise they couldn't afford.
Nothing is set yet, I need to try working these ideas into the existing set up, and I have Uni finals coming up so don't have unlimited time to play about.
yeah, am just going through all this and the area for foreign player/youth academy enhancing seems the most appealing, since many times the smaller clubs would want to look into those areas to generally improve their team. Buying the more expensive star players is sometimes not even an option.
2x La Liga trophy // Sevilla 2x Spanish cup // Sevilla 1x Premiership trophy // Man City 2x English cup // Man City 2x European Cup // Man City 1x Segunda trophy // Valencia
Currently working on updates but as such this is the situation.
Scouts will be able to be hired in various countries. These are likely to include countries such as Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France. Managers will be able to pay a set fee from their bank account and in return will get a scout for a season in that country. There will be set times during the season when players will appear on the scouting list - as they used to weekly on the Foreign Player Market - and only the teams with scouts in each country will be able to bid on players who appear.
Secondly work is being done on stadiums. Although they won't be set up how I had initially planned as theres no obvious way for me to work the interface of interactive stadiums into the game, it will allow managers to spend money on extending stadiums, building and naming new stadiums, and setting ticket prices at the start of the season. It will also give a break down of the finances such as income from tickets and maintanence costs.
As said before I'll be opening the game up to donations. If a manager donates at the start of a season they will get a package which includes a free scout and possibly a stadium upgrade, at no cost to your clubs bank account. This rewards managers for donating towards the game/site but also doesn't make it unfair on managers not wanting to donate.
Just reading your ideas. Rich the only problem I can see is donating to the game, getting a package as you said, but what happens if you change teams ? Do you take the package to your new team or leave it behind. The only way I thought of getting out of this is having contracts for managers. Eg season by season contracts and contracts extended if your doing well or not so well. As your not going to buy a package if your looking likely to get sacked
Fair point, but week one of the season who is worrying about being sacked?!
Also the majority of changes happen in the final 3 weeks of the season when teams start to have nothing to play for. So say if Leeds couldn't make the play offs with 2 weeks to go you might want to move ready for next season. By that stage of the season there would have been the scouting windows so you'd have benefitted or not already from your scout. As for the stadium, that will benefit people staying at a club long term and not club hopping. If you got sacked yes you'd lose it, but if everyone is in the same situation chances are you'd move to somewhere who had also increased capacity.
The only people who would lose out are those who choose to move mid season as a few do change during the season. Obviously this would be something the manager has to take into consideration but as with this season, it may be able to secure a position for the end of the season, so you play out the rest of the season where you are.
Managers will generally be asked to move by their chairman at the end of a season when targets are met or not. This means if you decide to donate for next season your new club will benefit.
By the end of this week I'll have finished my final uni exams so will be able to concentrate on the changes but a latest is this.
Scouting and Stadiums looks fairly certain to be coming in. As described above the Scouting will appear on here in a similar form to the old Foreign Player Market while the stadiums will be a similar addition to the Staff and will likely have a form in which managers can specify if they want to extend; this will only be for a set period during each season eg. Pre season to week 5. There's been little comment as to deonations, and the reward of a Scout/Stadium increase, so I can only assume if it were an issue people would have raised it.
Following on from the changes that will be made to this message board to include the Scouting section, I'll be removing the Foreign Player Market section. I'll also be looking to set up a MOTD style section on here which won't be run by myself.
I'm also considering a change to the way media is done. Clearly there's a delay between you sending it and me putting it up and if there was a better way in which you could put it straight up, that would obviously be better. My only problem with say having a section on here for managers to post their media is that there is no spell checker, and most media I have to run the spell checker over!!
On a boring front, I'm working on the efficiency of the engine to cut back on run time, although thats nothing that will actually change how the game works really.
In the old game in the media section there was an instant messaging chat room style thing powered by java - couldn't be used for media, but could be for banter - that way people could chat during live games and the like...
don't normaly post here as i like the game as it is but i was thinking would the results be able to be kept online for the season like we can look at the fixtures maybe have a place where all the results are kept of course the goal scores or anything like that just the scores wat does everyone think
