Not sure if this has been mentioned before but how about the chairman being more active?
For example:
Blocking a transfer - If someone is trying to sell their best player for a stupid price, chairman doesn't like it he blocks it.
Chairman proposes to sell a player/s to raise funds for the club.
What do you think?

although i don't actually have a chairman at the moment.............doh!
