Cardiff Toothless?

The under fire Cardiff manager has come under further pressure this week following a 1-0 loss to recently relegated Blackburn. The result may have been expected with a freshly appointed manager in the Blackburn dugout and a team made up of a lot of Premiership players who came down with the club, however Cardiff struggled to create any chances against the better side.

Continuations of last weeks walk out protests before the end of the match were followed up with some less than supportive banners being held up in some sections of the ground by the Welsh fans. One fan afterwards described the team as being Too defensive and toothless up front. Rumours in the local press have suggested the pressure is getting to ex-Juventus front man Raffaele Palladino who is becoming unsettled in South Wales.

Also, Albin, who was publicly criticised by the fans for his performance last week, will be under no illusions as to his own insecure position in the squad after Jaques showed no support for the player in dropping him immediately from the team.

The glimmer of hope for Jaques comes from his chairman who has refused to pander to the medias requests for an interview on the position of the clubs manager, but how long can he avoid the inevitable questions that will be raised while Cardiff continue to struggle?

Cortez puts on show

Last week Cortez spoke about his love for his first professional club and his admiration for his manager Simon Jenkins. In a live broadcasted match against surprise fellow relegation battlers Real Betis Cortez put on a good performance grabbing himself a goal and generally looking very lively.

Following reports that a number of scouts from Manchester and London would be at the game to see the talented striker, he will have done his prospects of a high profile move no harm with such a performance.

Devils left with tales between legs

Manchester United have had what can only be described as a disastrous start to the new season. A team steeped in history, many pundits are already writing them out of the Premiership title race as they sit 6th with 7 points less than Chelsea already.

The manager can be credited for trying to address the age issue of the squad since the end of last season when they faded away from a more youthful looking Chelsea side. However the manager is sure to be disappointed with the lacklustre effort being shown by some of the younger players being given their chances.

Despite Rooney, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho showing signs of good form, United dropped more points this week at home to an impressive looking Spurs side. No doubt the pressure will be growing on the manager now who surely has to win something this season to keep hold of such a high profile job?

Ambrose leaves parting shot

Darren Ambrose this week joined Coventry in a swap deal that saw Dennis Rommedahl move from the Ricoh Arena in the other direction. Ambrose delivered a farewell shot at the Charlton manager for being too negative in the transfer market.

I love Charlton, I love the place and the fans. The stadium is great to play in too. I didnt want to leave. He [McGuigan] hasnt brought anyone in and the club is in a slide backwards. He didnt fight for me. I feel disappointed.

His comments may strike a note with many a Charlton fan. The average age of this weeks team was a staggering 33 with veterans like Makelele, Thorne and Myhre all well past their best now theyve reached 37, with Thorne being the only signing of late in a free transfer.

Post Everton v Manchester City reaction

Another three two win and another good performance, how pleased were you with todays performance?

I have a great bunch of honest pros who work hard and I cant ask anymore than a win. We are conceding to many and that is something we will be working on in the coming weeks with some tough games coming up. Everton deserve great credit and played some great football. They have been very unlucky this season but so far but they do have enough quality to get a run together.

You midfielders seem to be the key for you this season?

I think we have quality throughout the team to be fair. Navarro at the back has been sensational for us as have Baines and Eboue. In midfield we have a lot if quality, they are all comfortable on the ball which is important the way we play. Anelka upfront give us that extra bit of quality and Tumudi hasnt let us down either.

The rumour mill has been doing overtime and the rumours suggest Danielli and Flamini will be leaving this week?

We have agreed fees with other clubs for both and the deals should be complete very shortly. We are disappointed to see both leave but wish them well at the new clubs. Flamini hadnt been getting as much football as he wanted so we agreed to sell him at a knock down price to a club he really wanted to go to.

And anyone coming in?
We did agree a fee of £13.5m for Alan Smith of Fiorentina and that deal should be confirmed today however since Alan (Smith) has had personal problems and has decided he feels he should be staying in Italy so he will be returning next week. We hope to bring in another striker though and its someone who the fans will be very excited about.

And finally Man City currently fifth and one place ahead of Manchester United in the league, you must be delighted.
It hasnt happened for a long long time and Im delighted as are the fans who have the bragging rights for this week in Manchester. We will stay focused though and wont be going over the top about this as its just the start.

Toffees cup clash 'not a priority'.

Coventry City manager Mark Rollings watched his side put in another impressive Championship display away at the Reebok stadium, but then took time out to warn Sky Blues fans to expect a dramatically changed team for the midweek cup clash against Premiership Everton. Rollings left those in attendance at the post match press conference in no doubt that his teams focus was well and truely on the league.

'It was another great result for us today and we have proved we can stand up to the better teams in this division. The way I see it we are roughly 10-12 points off safety and that is our primary focus right now. I know we have a tasty cup clash at home to Everton this Tuesday, but I cant let that distract us from our bread and butter. Some players in our squad need to be looked after physically and I cannot expect them to play every game. Its a chance for some of the fringe players to come in and show me they can be considered.'

Rollings has been criticised in the past for his lack of enthusiasm for the worlds most famous cup competition. However, he can point to the first round humbling of Championship companions Charlton, with a severely under strength team, to silence his critics.

Everton manager Glenn Page may well consider taking a note out of Rollings book. The Toffees are deep in the relegation battle and with many old heads, could do without the distraction of a prolonged cup run sapping the players energies.

'They arent the youngest team in The Premiership thats for sure. Maybe Everton will see it as an opportunity to rest players, but we are aware that they have some quality players waiting to take such a chance and as such they will be tough opposition regardless. Glenn will have to look after players such as Thierry Henry, Gianluigi Buffon, Johnathan Zebina and Gary Naysmith as I dont think they have the legs to play week in week out anymore. It may be that he sees this as a chance to do so. But our fans shouldnt expect that it make us favourites. We will be taking similar precautions with our older players, and Everton have a Premiership squad with some real depth.'

Speculation in the Coventry press has suggested the likes of Davide Bassi, Alessandro Nesta, Joey Barton, Alberto Rivera and Diego Forlan are set to sit out the tie, while new recruit Darren Ambrose will have to wait for his debut as the Coventry boss uses the full spectrum of his squad.

My players need to be "Gutsy" - Davies-Evans

Cagliari manager has told a packed press confrence that his team need to learn to start taking more chances and be more clinical infront of goal.

"This week we will be working mainly on our build up play and finishing. We have started making more chances in the past few games but we are still not creating enough for the front men. We have some quality upfront and we know that the more chance we create for them then the more chance we have of taking all 3 points."

Davies-Evans was also pleased to see Theo Walcott get off the mark for his side.

"Yeah it was great for Theo to get his first goal. He's worked really hard for the team since arriving and really deserves that goal. Him and Manuel (Iarrusso) have worked really well together and I'm sure that Simon (Newcombe) will be pleased as this is surely thr future strikeforce at the Emirates. "

Davies-Evans then went on to explain this weeks deal that has seen Vannucchi and Raggi join from Sunderland and Fernando Baiano leave the other way.

"We are extemley happy with this deal. Vannucchi will give us great width and the supporters should be very excited that he will be playing on the right wing. He is of an older age though and we will have to use him correctly and may just have to wait for his debut until next week as we will be using a new formation this week. Raggi is a solid Centre Half that will give us the support and cover that we desperatley need in that area. Fernando did well for us in this time here but it was a deal that we just couldn't turn down. I would also like to take some time to reccomend Jonathan Petty as a great manager to do deals with. There are far too many managers out there that mess you about or let you down but we managed to sort our deal out with the minimum of fuss."

Davies-Evans then made some cheeky comments regarding his brothers record of 5 consecutive 1-1 draws in the league.

"Well if your doing the Italian pools then it's always a safe bet to put Dave down for a draw isn't it. There is no doubt that he's started to turn the team around. When he took over last season, they couldn't buy a goal let alone a win but he's turned them into a side that are very hard to beat. If he makes the next step and starts turning soem of these draw into wins then they have a great chance of a playoff place.

However, we will be doing all we can this season to make sure that we finish ahead of them and nick a playoff place instead of Reggina."

WEDNESDAY BOSS WANTS TO WALK

Sheffield Wednesday manager Hayden Dando revealed earlier today he wants out of Hillsbrough, here we find out why as he talks exclusively to sky sports.

SS - So Hayden how come you have decided you want to leave?

HD - It is not so much that i want to leave Wednesday i just feel that the challenge i could face with a big club is one i am more than capable of and i owe it to myself to go for it.

SS - So it's true your after the Athletico Madrid job?
HD - Yes, i love spain and spanish football, when i was min italy i got homesick but alot of that was due to being in serie B and going to some of the doldrums of italian football, but i feel my achoevments at Palermo and also here at Wednesday in settling the squad means i deserve the chance to have a shot at a club that can win something.

SS - Do you hold out much hope of getting the job?
HD - Yes i do actually, i feel that i have the credentials to manage a side like Madrid and would play a very active role within football as i have here.I have always spoken to you guys in the media and have conducted myself well in the transfer market.Indeed i believe i have brought some very good players to Wednesday who the fans may never have had the chance to see otherwise such as Dunn and De La Pena.My heart is not in it at Wednesday anymore and as such i don't want to mislead the fans at all, i just hope it is sorted swiftly and preferably before the next fixtures as i know how difficult it will be for the fans if i am still in charge at the next game.

SS - Anything to add?
HD - Yeah good luck and god bless to the Wednesday fans and hopefully i get the Madrid job and can help out the next Wednesday boss in whatever way he needs.

SS - Hayden, thank you
HD - No problem and thank you too

Latest from Cardiff Website

Sources have picked up on the recent rumour mill page on the recently released Cardiff website that the manager JD Jaques may be prepared to take offers for his two main strikers, but only if the offer is right. However, nothing has been added to the official website transfer list so this may be purely speculation. Manager Jaques has been tight lipped in recent days despite mounting criticism about his regime. Whether he is waiting to bring in a player before selling anyone is unclear at this stage.weirdface
