League Game Round-up - Week 7

The Championship

Aston Villa 2 - 3 West Brom

West Brom kept up the pressure on Blackburn on the top of the Championship, and produced a scintillating display off attacking football to take the spoils in a competitive match at Villa Park. The scoreline perhaps flattered The Villans, as there rivals tore into them for much of the game. Luca Toni proved a handful for the brittle Villa backline, and Leroy Lita linked up well to keep the defence guessing all game. Aston Villa fans can find some comfort in their teams clinical nature in front of goal, Gardner and  Gallas poaching two good goals to keep their team in the game.

However, anything less than a win would have been an injustice for the Baggies and with Blackburn drawing at home to Bolton Wanderers only one point separates Paul Harringtons side from top spot. They will need to keep up the good form however, to prevent Jamie Walkers Watford side displacing them from the automatic promotion slots.

Southampton 1 - 2 Watford

Watford maintained their impressive run of results away at Southampton, but could so easily have slipped up as the Saints threw away a great chance to keep a share of the spoils. Watford, uncharacteristally slack in defence, ceded too much possession to the ever impressive Saints midfield who more than matched their counterparts. Danny Guthrie once again impressed, his poise and creativity orchestrating most of Southamptons play. However, it was Watford who broke the deadlock, with Tamas Priskin punishing clumsy defending from the Saints.

The Southampton determination by no means diminished however, and Andrew Surman found an opening just four minutes later to bring back parity to an entertaining game. Buoyed by the goal Southampton chased the win, only for Watford to deliver the sucker punch through Priskin again, just four minutes later. This time Southampton had no answer and Watford keep on track for an automatic promotion slot.

Next up for the Hornets is the much anticipated game against Coventry City. The Sky Blues have lost the last two meetings between the sides and after another gutsy display from Watford here, may find themselves disappointed for a third time.

Norwich City 1 - 2 Reading

In what turned out to be a blood and thunder contest at Carrow Road, Reading piled yet more pressure onto an underachieving Norwich side who now find themselves deep in trouble at the bottom end of the Championship table. The match was always set to be a war of attrition, and the Royal boss Courtney Medlicott will be encouraged to see his side pull through. The win sees Reading leap frog Norwich into 10th spot, just inside the relegation zone, all be it only on goal difference.

Press speculation is mounting that manager Chris Ratcliff is under pressure from the clubs board to start moving the Canaries up and away from the Championship drop zone. Failure to do so could see the ex-Real Madrid boss searching for a new job. Bookmakers Sky Bet have already started taking bets on the Canaries next manager with ex-boss Dale Price 5-1 Favourite to return to Carrow Road.

Coventry City 3 - 2 Middlesbrough

Coventry City earnt an invaluable win at home to a fancied Middlesbrough team to once more defy pre-season predictions of relegation as they moved into fourth place in the Championship table. Many would have expected the Sky Blues recent good form to have been ended by a Boro side full of quality, but a gutsy, free flowing display by Mark Rollings men caught their opposition cold in a good display of attacking football.

Joey Barton once again produced a superb display in the middle of the park, driving forward at will to almost constant effect. Yakubu was unlucky to finish on the losing side, as the Nigerians power and pace troubled the Coventry defence all day. In the end though, the win was well deserved for the Sky Blues, and they will take great optimism into the rest of the season.

Afterwards manager Mark Rollings politely asked the press to leave him and his team to their own devices over the coming week, as the Young Welsh manager prepares his side for the upcoming fixture against Watford. Rollings explained that he wanted nothing to get in the way of his sides preperations ahead of the big clash, and would not be speaking to the press til after the match.

Cardiff City 1 - 1 Charlton Athletic

Cardiff City fans once again vented their frustration after another lacklustre display at Ninian Park. Manager JD Jaques is under severe pressure to start turning the clubs fortunes around following a string of disappointing results and performances which have left the Bluebirds in serious trouble. This result will do little to appease the unsatisfied fans, as Cardiff failed to impress against fellow strugglers Charlton.

The game was a dull affair, with neither side able to get a foothold in midfield. Creativity was at a premium going forward, and it took two defensive errors to provide any sort of entertainment. In truth, Cardiff can perhaps claim to have just about edged the game, but the scoreline failed to reflect their marginal superiority.

After the game, a source close to Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale suggested that the board were due to meet this week to discuss the future of the club. Jaques can take some comfort however, that according the source a final decision on the matter is by no means imminent.

Blackburn Rovers 1 - 1 Bolton Wanderers

Rovers ambitions of a title winning season were hit by a disappointing draw at home to North-West rivals Bolton this weekend, as they failed to reach their early season heights. Bolton were always likely to represent a stern test of Rovers 100% record, and managed to grind out an impressive result which leaves them comfortably inside the play off places.

The match sprang into life on 21 minutes, as Ludovic Guily, a menace throughout, weaved through two defenders outwide and delivered a pinpoint slide pass into the path of Niko Kranjcar on the front post. The Croatian met the ball with a rasping right foot, which took his goal tally to 9 for the season, and left Blackburn visibly rattled.

However, Morten Gamst Pedersen once again showed his Premiership credentials on 48 minutes, as he swung in a characteristic cross towards Benni McCarthy on the penalty spot. The South African marksman met the ball with his head, to send the ball into the net to the relief of the home fans.

Despite pressing late on, Blackburn couldnt break down Bolton again, and the Trotters will be delighted in taking a share of the spoils down the short trip down the M6.

Spanish La Liga

Atletico Madrid 4-2 Villarreal

Atletico secured a comfortable victory over fellow unmanaged side Villarreal at the Vicente Calderon. A superb hat-trick from summer signing Mido proved to be the difference between the sides in a match that was already decided by half-time. The result means that Atletico remain hot on the heels of the top 3, but it also leaves Villarreal in a dangerous position in the relegation zone with only one win from seven. Chairman Fernando Alfonso will surely be stepping up his search for a new head coach in the next few weeks before the current situation worsens.

Sevilla 4-1 Valencia

Sevilla were comprehensive winners over Tony Wood's Valencia. Four goals from midfield positions proved that the Sevillistas have goalscoring threats all over the field, and the result means that Sevilla remain level on points with leaders Barcelona, with only goal difference separating them. Valencia are in fifth place on 14 points going into their game with Real Madrid next week.

Real Valladolid 2-3 Recreativo Huelva

Real Valladolid were unlucky to go down 3-2 in a pulsating match with Recreativo, in which they had taken in a 1-0 lead at the break. Young starlet David Cortez further enhanced his growing reputation across Europe with two spectacular goals past Tim Howard in the Recreativo goal. Goals from loan star Carlos Acuna and prospect Fernando Vaz were just enough to secure three points for Recreativo, moving them out of the drop zone and into 6th place.

Real Madrid 3-0 Real Mallorca

Paul Janyshiwskyi's side managed to put three goals past Mallorca, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table without one point to their name. In a game mostly dominated by the two defences, the Mallorca manager will no doubt be cursing his sides luck that they could not keep themselves a first clean sheet of the season after a goalless first half. Meanwhile, the Real Madrid manager must now decide which attacking player to drop from the team to make room for new superstar signing Wayne Rooney.

Levante 2-2 Real Betis

Betis will be disappointed that they could not hold onto a two goal advantage against opponents promoted from the Segunda Liga last season. Goals from Rafael Sobis and Jose Isodoro, a rumoured target for English side Newcastle United, had put Betis into a seemingly comfortable lead, but they could not hold out for the victory which would have lifted them out of the drop zone. Nino and Damien Francis both beat Betis keeper David James in the last ten minutes secured a vital point for the home side.

Barcelona 4-1 Espanyol

League leaders Barcelona continued their fantastic 100% start to the season with victory in the city derby. The two teams were level at 1-1 at the break, but the game was marred by a horror challenge from Espanyol defender Manuel Ruz on Javier Portillo, earning Ruz a straight red card. Matthew Taylor slammed home the resulting free kick and further goals from Lionel Messi and Richard Stearman ensured that Barcas fans have the bragging rights of the city.

League One

Birmingham 1-1 Wolves

An uncharacteristic draw against a mid table Birmingham side saw Jamie Bests Wolves side slip out of the top 2.  Although Wolves created the lions share of chances Nsofor Victor Obinna could only add one goal to his impressive haul so far this season.

Birmingham took an early 8th minute lead when Neil Danns setup Sebastian Larsson for his first goal of the season, but holding on for 82 mins was a step to far for the underachieving Birmingham side.  Having said that most Brum fans would have been happy with the result.

Sheff Wed 0-1 Sunderland

With Wolves slipping up Sunderland seized their chance and leapt out of the play off zone and into an automatic promotion spot. A Michael Chopra goal half way through the second half proved decisive in this encounter after good play from Nyron Nosworthy provided the goal scoring opportunity.

It was a very even game with 4 chances a piece on a day where it looked as though the defences would win out Sheff Weds lackluster strikers could not match Chopra as he bagged his 5th goal of the campaign.

Preston 0-1 Sheff United

Sheff United secured a valuable win away at Preston which saw the two teams swap league positions. In a game that Sheff Utd just edged it took a goal just after half time to separate the two sets of players with striker Antonio Guayre turning provider for midfielder Mario Regueiro punishing the Preston defence.

Preston need to pick themselves up and move on if they are to keep their playoff dream alive. These two seem certain to be fighting out for the 4th play off place for the rest of the season.

Leicester 1-3 Notts Forest

In this bottom of the table clash Forest turned on the style and in turn doubled the amount of goals they have scored all season. Peter Crouch said goodbye to the forest fans as he produced a man of the match performance with 2 goals and an assist with Sammy Clingan claiming the other goal.

Paulinho provided a late consolation goal for Leceister but it really was too little too late. Could this victory inspire Forest to climb up the table? And can Leicester find something to kick start their season?

Derby 1-1 Leeds

Leeds provided their travelling fans with a gutsy performance away at the league leaders.  In a game that everyone thought Derby would cruise through Neal Steers boys rose to the occasion and proved they were made of sterner stuff.

Derby took an early lead through Ryan Smith and it seemed like business as usual but a Leeds side that had shipped 9 goals before this game shut up shop and stopped Derby creating chances. Just after the half hour Leeds striker Adriano Montalto popped up to score his first of the season after good work down the left from Gyorgy Garics. The game petered out a bit in the second half with both teams cancelling out the other.

Bristol City 1-1 Crystal Palace

In a game both sides really wanted to win a draw had to be settled with. Chris Gale will be the happier of the two managers with an away point, but both teams know if they want to challenge Wolves, Sunderland and Derby these are games they need to win.

Palace took the lead in the 51st minute when Clinton Morrison repaid his Managers faith in him with his first goal of the season, but that was shortly cancelled out when Leon McKenzie pounced on Pedro Marios long clearance.  Bristol City edged the chances on the day and will probably be disappointed that they didnt score more.

ENGLISH PREMIERSHIP

Arsenal 4 vs Wigan 0

Even without influential star Frank Lampard, who was rested, Arsenal proved far too strong for an under pressure Wigan side. Two assists each for Torres and Fabregas, two goals from unlikely source Phillippe, and a goal a piece from the two frontmen secured a comprehensive win for the Gunners. A perfect victory with a tough league game against Spurs next week

Spurs 2 vs West Ham 2

Established West Ham proved to hard to outmuscle in the league game at White Hart Lane. Difficult at any time, Spurs were pegged back from two goals up to claim only a point. Does this prove the strength of the premiership that no game is easy even for the top sides? The rematch between the two sides later in the season will be interesting, but Spurs need to make sure of beating the teams around them to keep title asperations alive this season

Newcastle 1 vs Portsmouth 2

Under fire Newcastle lost even more ground this weekend as they lost to a professional and thorough Portsmouth side. It was qouted in the media that it was exactly these sorts of matchs that Newcastle have to start winning - but equally the St James Park faithful will never lose their spirit that the Gaffer can turn things around

Man City 2 Man Utd 5

Man City have returned to a position beneath their fierce rival in the table following a heavy defeat. Many people tipped City to compete at a bigger level but Man U returning to form proved too much for them at the weekend. How will United fare without star player Rooney though? He scored a hattrick in this last game for the club (as well as two assists!) and it remains to be seen if this kind of contribution will be missed.......

Fulham 0 vs Liverpool 2

Liverpool continued their rise up the table with a good win at Fulham. Still looking for their first points of the season, Fulham didnt show enough invention to even have a chance of taming Liverpool. Goals from Malouda and Saviola sealed the points for the visitors

Chelsea 3 vs Everton 1

Chelsea were not their free flowing self today, but still managed to prove too much for Henry lead Everton. Kaka kept up his scoring ratio with another two goals, while the two Cole's combined for the other goal in a 3-1 win. Everton can take some solice from the fact that they matched Chelsea for some periods of the game, but need to work on containing opponents before the victories start coming

Almeria 1 Real Zaragoza 1

Arthur Gillion will be proud of his teams performance against the Segunda leaders but will be extremely disapointed not to at least get a point. Diego Milito opened the scoring on 27 minuted before the impressive Uche deservedly got the equaliser on 38 mins after great work from his young strike partner Caturano in the build up. And after good early pressure in the 2nd half it was Zaragoza s fitness and determination which paid off, A great 84th minute strike from Antonio Nunes won it. A strike worthy of winning any game

Real Murcia 0 Real Sociedad 1

Sociedad just about deserved their win after a stubborn defensive performance from Real Murcia. Ex Leeds United and Aston Villa striker Shaun Maloney got the winner in the 75 th minute. Rounding the helpless ageing Juanmi after being played through with a great defence splitting pass from Gerardo

Osasuna 1 Racing Santander 1

Both teams will be happy not to lose this match as 3rd entertained 4th at Osasuna. David Lopez got his 2nd goal of the season on 86 minutes which he and Osasuna thought was the winner only to be cancelled out by Martin late 90th minute winner after great work from man of the match Juanjo

Getafe 1 Gimnastic 1

A very poor game in all today as Getafe and Gimnastic got a bore 1-1 draw. Centreback Paredes opened the scoring with a powerfull header after bad marking from a Verpakovskis corner. Paolucci hitting a long range equaliser for Gimnastic in the 59th minute to share the spoils

Celta Vigo 3 Deportivo 1
Performance of the day today goes to Celta Vigo after convincinly brushing aside Deportivo. A lot was at stake for this game due to recent negotiations of transfers of numerous players.A bitter atmosphere between the 2 managers. Man of the match Johnathan opened the scoring on 10 mins after a sweetly struck free-kick from 30 yards. Valeron , 1 of the men caught up in transfer failings then got an equaliser and refused to celebrate his goal ! Iain Hume on loan from West Brom then put Vigo 2-1 up after a quickly taken free-kick from Johnathan was caught on the volley by Hume who celebrated delirously with the Vigo supporters. The nail in the coffin then came from Johnathan with another of his expert free-kicks. Bitter words was said between managers in the tunnel at full-time after rumours has it that Gardner refused to shake the Predators hand.

Bilbao 1 Cadiz 1

A game of missed chances happened between Bilbao and Cadiz today. Both teams managed a very impressive 8 shots each on target and how the score ended at 1-1 is a credit to both keepers.Andy Keogh opened the scoring for Bilbao on 8 mins before young Daniel Sturridge kept his impressive goalscoring streak with his 4th goal in 6 games
