League Game Round Up - Week 9

FA League 1

Birmingham 1-1 Preston

Birmingham secured a home point against a Preston side that have pushing for a permanent spot in the playoffs so far this season. Centre Back Matthew Sadler put the home team ahead just before half time with a towering header from Rowan Vines corner.  But just when it looked like the Blues might take all 3 points an 80th minute equaliser from Amedao Calliari got a deserved point for Matt Galeozzis battling Preston side.

Leicester 1-1 Sheff Wed

In this bottom of the table clash Sheffield Wednesday got off to a flying start as Glenn Whelan fired them into a 1st minute lead.  Chances came and went and it really did appear that Sheffield would take home all three points.  But in the dying minutes Leicesters Paulinho popped up to hammer home Francis Jeffers through ball. Although Sheffield Wednesday will feel hard done by most of their fans would have taken an away point at the start of the day.

Derby 2-1 Wolves

Derby took back their top spot as Wolves slump continues.  After 2 draws for both teams many were wondering whether the same result would occur in this match, however it was Derby who looked the more confident from the word go culminating in a 10th minute goal for Marlon King.  Derby bossed the game a created the greater chances but we all know how Jamie Bests Wolves side never give in and it was they who scored next. Goal machine Nsofor Victor Obinna this week turned provider with a lovely weighted pass which strike partner David Cotterill gratefully slotted home. But as the chances kept coming it was only a matter of time before Derby grabbed a winner and so in the 83 minute Marlon King completed his brace after good work down the left from James McEveley.

BristolCity 1-1 Sunderland

Sunderland relinquished top spot after an away draw with BristolCity.  In a game that seemed to twist one way and then the other Sunderland burst out the blocks to score after just 7 minutes through Michael Chopra, at this point it looked like the Black Cats might demoralise Bristol City but then Stephen Wells boys are now made of sterner stuff and created a host of chances at the end of the first half to leave the Mackems happy to still be 1 up at halftime.  That lead did not last long into the second half as Phil Jevons scored his 4th of the seasons after a barnstorming run and cross by left back Jamie McAllister.  Both teams had a number of chances to nick a win but overall a draw was a fair result.

CrystalPalace 1-0 Sheff Utd

CrystalPalace continued there slow but steady climb up the table with a 1 0 win at home to playoff hopefuls Sheffield United.  Palace proved again that if you dont concede a lot of goals then you will do well in this league, they have only conceded 6 in 9 games.  Another goal for experienced striker Eidur Gudjohnsen proved what a shrewd bit of business he was making it 7 in 9 games.  He was supplied by new loanee strike partner Rafael Sobis for  his 60th minute goal.  Sheffield United have been picking up point nicely recently but just did not seem to turn up a Selhurst Park today and created only a handful of chances, Manager Kevin Hunter will hope for a better performance next week against lowly Notts Forest.

Leeds 1-1 Notts Forest

Although Notts Forests season appears to be over they refuse to finish without a fight. A one all draw against Leeds United proved that they still have fire in their bellys and a point to prove.  Leeds form this season has been indifferent to say the least and this home draw will not have pleased their fans.  Goals from David Thompson and Roberto Di Natale completed this match and although chances came and went for both sides a draw always seemed the most likely outcome for this match.
