McFawn says goodbye to Huelva

Rob McFawn sat down for the after-match press conference that concluded his three year affiliation with Recreativo Huelva.

Rob, were you happy with the way your players performed in your last game as manager?

Yes I thought it was a good performance from the lads today. After some very poor results recently, the players each pushed up their own performances a few gears which was nice to see. We have had better results against Valencia during my stay but it was very important for me that we took something from the game today, so I am happy with the result.

It was also a farewell for young Carlos Acuna today. How do you see his future panning out?

Carlos has been just fantastic for us over the past two years. He is an absolute quality player - 23 goals for us this season proves that. I'm just so happy that I have had the opportunity to work with him and that Recreativo Huelva has helped to develop one of world football's most exciting young talents. I'm sure that when he returns to Sevilla their other strikers will know they've got a battle on their hands to keep their places!

After three seasons, what was your best moment in charge?

Well its hard to look beyond our survival season, i think the way we played in the second half of that season had all of Spain shaking. But overall I think my most proud moment was reaching the Cup Final last year. We were written off to be steamrolled against Atletico in the semi but what a fantastic game that was, and we pulled it out of the hat. That was the peak of my time here.

How do you see the club performing in the next season or two?

I believe there is a solid base here and some fantastic youth, so how Recreativo perform will depend on the little changes that are made. I admit this season we did not keep up any momentum from the previous two years, but hopefully my replacement will be right and this club can continue to improve and develop.

So where next for you?

That it still undecided. I received an offer a few weeks back but it was not the right time to move - now its time to consider any offers I might get.

So is a new job in Spain a possibility?

I wouldn't want to rule anything out. I don't really see myself managing in a country unknown to me. I'd love to manage in England again, but I have loved my time in Spain and as I say nothing can be ruled out.

Thanks Rob.

Thanks.

Napoli look forward to playoffs

We caught up with Manager of Napoli JD Jaques prior to his team's play off semi final against Genoa.

"We are confident of causing Genoa problems. They will have to play their second choice keeper Aouate and we think that he is their main weakness. We are likely to try to test him at every opportunity."

"Whilst we will be missing Cupi at the back, I hope that we can keep Sculli quiet. He is an old enemy, having left Chievo some time ago when I was in charge, and then telling some lies about my management of the team. Perhaps with an older head on his shoulders now he has matured somewhat, and you can't argue with his goal scoring record this season."

"If Genoa think that simply because they finished 3rd they have the right to promotion then I have to tell them they are mistaken. They may have finished 6 points ahead of us in the league, but that means nothing now."

There are rumours beginning to circulate that JD Jaques after half a season in charge at Napoli may be looking for a new club if they get promoted via the play offs, and therefore that he does not really want to win the next two games. When asked about this he responded:

"It is absolute rubbish that we wont play as well as we can in the next 2 games. I know what it is like to make the play offs and then lose and I can tell you that it was not a good feeling. That was the start of the downward turn at Cardiff - the loss we suffered to Reading in the play off semi finals last season. What I would say is that the club is going to be making enquiries about exactly how much prize money is available to the 3rd team that achieves promotion, because it is not clear. We would need prize money to begin to compete with established Serie A teams, otherwise this club would struggle. I will be talking to the chairman regarding the possibility of promotion and the problems that the club would face. I am aware of those problems having achieved promotion via the play offs on two occassions, but at the moment we concentrate on the next game."

Ascoli Come Through Penalty Marathon to reach Play-Off Final!

Jonny Sinclair and the Ascoli faithful were in rapture after beating Cagliari in penalties 6-5 to give themselves a Play-off final with managerless Genoa after a 2-1 win over Napoli.

This was after a tight 2-2 draw in the normal 90 minutes and no one could break through in extra time so it came to a penalty shoot out which was just as tight with the first ten penalty takers all scoring before three Cagliari players missed penalties amazingly though Ascoli missed the next three as well Mancienne then missed his penalty thanks to a great save from Kaspar Schmeichel and it came to Riccardo Corallo to score and get us through and he tucked away in the bottom corner giving Wayne Henessey no chance and giving Ascoli a dream win and this gives Jonny Sinclair a second bite of the cherry after managing to get Cagliari in the same spot last season but sadly lost to Empoli 2-0.

Sinclair will now hope he can emulate that and get Ascoli promoted to Serie A

This is what Sinclair had to say after the game

'It's brilliant absolutely fantastic we got off to the best start going to 2-0 in ten minutes but i was furious at halff time as they had mangered to claw it back it was disgraceful but we pushed on and held in there then the penalties came and it was unbelievable every kept scoring them and then all of a sudden everyone kept missing them and then finally Riccardo whos been great for us this season whacked it in i couldnt believe its great but we have to dust ourselves off now for the Genoa game we have to be up for fight and get promoted which i think we deserve also i have to heap a lot of praise on Steve because he's carried on where i left Cagliari and he made this game so tough it was fitting it would be decided by penalties the luck of the draw because the two teams had been neck and neck throughout this year we had the same points at the endof the season and im sad to see my ex team lose because Cagliari are a part of me as well now but business is business and im chuffed because we can now dare to dream but we wont lose our heads i'll make sure of that i wish Steve all the best in his new job at Sheffield Wednesday hopefully i'll be even more elated after saturday's game thanks'

Petty under pressure

SKY.com caght up with Sunderland Manager Jonathan Petty to discuss his teams loss in the Semi final of the play offs.

So Jonathan, you lost, just on penalties. What went wrong?

"Well to be honest it was that close a game with two fantastic teams thats why it went to penalties. As you can see they have two world class full backs in Maldini and Cafu, Maldini on loan what can I say the manager has used the market wisely and its paid off. Unfortunatly for them they are both injured for the final"

Some people say you should have wrapped this season up a while back but Bristol pipped you to second, whats your thoughts?

"One thing I can say STeW at Bristol is the best manager in the league and one day will be a premiership manager with or without Bristol. He is so tactically advanced and may not have had the best team but he brings the best out of what he has, I hope the board back him 100% because like me he is dedicated to one club not like a lot of managers forever bailing out on their clubs! STeW is a great friend of mine and our clubs have decided to link up to help each other out during the next season."

Who do you think will win the playoff final?

"I know Preston beat us but i'm going with Palace, Paul Parry will run the show on the day, a player I admire"

What now for you and Sunderland?

"I'm waiting to speak to the manager, I love this club and since I joined I believe i've said i'm preparing for the future, yes we should have gone up last year, but I think it would have been difficult to hold our own up in the Championship last year. This year however if we had gone up I think we would have pushed for a playoff place, simply because of the top class players i'm bringing in next year. Unfortunatly for Sunderland I don't think they will come if I released by the club."

If you stay at the club how will you do next year?

"We will win the league by half way through the season, i'm confident of that, like I said there are some amazing players coming to the club and mixed with the young talented players here we will dominate this league"

Thanks for the interview and good luck with Sunderland we hope you stay and fulfill your dream.

Chairmen call press conferences

Sunderland and Manchester United have both confirmed that there will be a press conference held in the next 24 hours. Manchester United lost in the English Cup Final to Liverpool to deny them a trophy this season, which only added more pressure on the already tenuous position of manager Iain Kochanowksi. Meanwhile, Sunderland failed yet again to gain promotion out of League One under Jonathan Petty, adding another season to their extended exile out of the top two flights.

Bookmakers have already stopped taking bets on the sacking of Petty following last nights display against Preston, and have announced the same for Kochanowski after this announcement.

Fans hail great escape

Newcastle fans were left delightedly breathing a collective sigh of relief as they condemned Fulham and Everton to Championship football next season. Three teams were vying for the final survival position going into the last game, but a win for Newcastle secured top flight football for another season.

The head of the Newcastle official fan site said he was over the moon. "The feeling after that game must be what it feels like to win a trophy. It's been a long hard season but we managed to stay up and that's the important thing in the end. I guess the manager and players need to stop this happening again, because I don't think my heart can take another season like that, but for now we're going to enjoy the celebrations."

It is believed chairman Chris Mort was particularly unhappy throughout the season and had been lining up a replacement for manager Martin Turney should the team be relegated. Although no statement has come from the chairman since Friday's game, all agree the Newcastle regime will be quickly changed should next season begin badly.

Sulaiman Al-Fahim spotted at play-off tie

Head of the Abu Dhabi group looking to purchase a football club, Al-Fahim, was spotted at the Cagliari - Ascoli Serie B play-off game last night. As his picture was shown on the large electronic scoreboard, both sets of fans started to cheer.

Al-Fahim has attracted wide speculation about which club the group will invest in and while enjoying the attention, has remained tight lipped about possible discussions with clubs. Cagliari will have to face another season in Serie B after their mammoth penalty shoot-out loss to Ascoli, as well as losing manager Davies-Evans to Sheffield Wednesday. Ascoli have a growing appreciation for their young talent production line and placing themselves in the play-off final could have brought themselves to the Abu Dhabi groups attention.

Quinn gives ultimatum

Niall Quinn spoke frankly in front of a large gathering of local and national press this afternoon in what can at best be described a warning, at worst an ultimatum. Sunderland have failed to live up to their tag as favourites for consecutive seasons and sections of the Black Cats faithful have been calling for the managers head since last nights result.

Quinn, who has always backed his manager, gave an honest assessment of the situation. "The fans aren't happy, and neither is the board. I'm the man that has to make sure everyone at this club goes home happy. I need the right wheels in place to make that work. Jonathan Petty has done a lot at this club and we appreciate that but at some point you have to look and say 'if we can't go forwards on those wheels, lets change them'. I will be speaking with him about next season, but this club can't spend any longer at this level before it affects our playing staff. I saw his statement to the press earlier in the papers and I have to agree. He has my support but unless he can deliver the league as he's promised to, the board will over rule my vote next season."

Petty now faces a pressure situation, with a poor start to next season potentially going to cost him his job. While some fans won't be happy with Quinn's decision, it does appear this is the final vote of confidence for the under fire manager.

Coventry bidding war

A brief statement from the Ricoh Arena has given the reason for the delay to Ranson's announcement over the sale of the club. The chairman had claimed he would be out of the club by the new season and last week it was revealed a bid had been received from an unknown party.

"Coventry City football club can confirm we have received a second offer to purchase the club. Ranson is reviewing them at this moment but both are extremely similar sums of money and both are from similar backgrounds."

When pushed further, the spokeswoman said that Ranson was expected to make a personal statement later today regarding the bids, which as of yet, have had nothing revealed about either of them.

Coakley backs chairman

AC Milan manager today come out to back his chairman while other managers around him are praying for the Abu Dhabi group to come and invest.   It is believe the Abu Dhabi group have been traveling around Europe looking to invest in a football club.  One manager who has warned caution is former Manchester City and current AC Milan manager Luke Coakley.  "A lot of managers are very keen to see the club they manage taken over by multi billionaires and its obvious to everyone why, but I think some caution needs to be added to some peoples thoughts.  Everyone wants investment to improve the team and squad but men like Sulaiman Al-Fahim will want instant results and unless the foundations are set in the first place then the mix can be disastrous for the club long term and in some cases long term.  A lot of these chairmen have little loyalty to the manager and the club so it puts managers in a difficult position when trying to sign players."

The Milan manager took out special time to praise his current chairman Silvio Berlusconi "Milan as a club sold itself to me but Silvio (Berlusconi) was a key factor in me joining. He has money, he has ambition but he is a realist and has a footballing mind as well as a business mind and the mix allows me to do what I think is best for the club both short and long term.  I think Milan are in for exciting times over the next few years."

Al-Fahim to invest in little Ascoli surely not?

Jonny Sinclair spoke to media today to clarify if Al-Fahim was planning on investing in Ascoli

'Well i didnt know he was attending the game until like the fans saw him on the big screen tv and whether he was at the game to watch us or Cagliari i don't know but i hope he enjoyed the game and saw us as potential suitors as a team he'd want to buy

investment would be great because we're not a massive club and the chairmen hasnt got massive amounts of money which i perfectly understand but to be honest i have no idea if he does want to invest in us he might of had a word with the chairmen but thats between themselves it has nothing to do with me my job is to do the best i can with what i have and i'll carry on with that until someone says otherwise

its not as if he hasnt been to other games to see possible teams to buy so im keeping a level head at the moment on that front ive got more important things to worry about at the moment such as the play-off final and when my chinese takeaway will arrive but seriously if he does want to invest then thats fantastic and it would be my pleasure to welcome him to the club and show him around if he does choose to invest in us but me and the chairmen are happy to push along with what we've got for now weve not done to badly with a limited budget this season have we?

Reading prepare meeting with McFawn

Ex-Recreativo Huelva manager Rob McFawn today announced his interest in the vacant Reading position, and it appears the club is prepared to move swiftly on the interest. Reports leaked from inside the English club suggest the board members are putting together a package to approach the manager with in the next 24 hours.

McFawn is one of the more high profile managers being linked in newspapers across Europe for various vacant positions. Other names being mentioned include under fire managers Petty (Sunderland) and Kochanowksi (Manchester United), and Spanish duo Marsh (Cadiz) and Gillion (Almeria) who face each other in the play-off final on Friday.

Levante unveil Kochanowksi

Late last night a statement posted on the Manchester United website announced the parting of Iain Kochanowksi and Manchester United. The Red Devils have had a poor season and while some fans think the dismissal is harsh on a manager forced to rebuild the squad, everyone was expecting the decision to happen despite this.

Yet relegated Spanish side Levante have wasted no time in snapping up the experienced manager. The club is said to be delighted to have attracted such a high profile name and are looking for immediate promotion back to La Liga in the coming season.

Claude Kurson bought the club two seasons ago and his investment saw them achieve play-off promotion in his first season in ownership. Kurson announced he would be doubling his investment into the squad with a further £15 million being diverted to the transfer funds as of today. Many now expect Levante to be the power house in the Segunda Division.

Sureda backs manager

Real Valladolid chairman Carlos Sureda has put his full support behind manager Simon Jenkins in a public interview this morning. Speculation was that Valladolid had been on a shortlist for the Abu Dhabi investment group to purchase, but Sureda admits it's unlikely to happen.

"I had a meeting with the manager to discuss things. We wanted to talk about the finances and up coming transfers but the possibility of this buy out was mentioned. I love this club but I won't kid myself that I can say no to everyone. I'm no billionaire. Jenkins said he had no interest in a change of chairman and his support for our working relationship is very pleasing. I can assure fans the club is not for sale and the successful regime currently in place will continue."

With Valladolid out of the running, wild speculation has increased regarding the location of the football club to be bought up, with reports coming from the Midlands of a bid being readied.

Happy Wednesday's

Sheffield Wednesday have announced the introduction of their transfer budget for the new season. Chairman Bernie Ecclestone had promised a large investment when a new manager was appointed and this week saw the awaited arrival of Steve Davies-Evans from Cagliari. Ecclestone commented briefly "Although Steve is disappointed at how things ended losing the play-off game for Cagliari, everyone at the club is looking forward to the beginning of a new era, and this investment marks that.

Davies-Evans - "Time to build"

New Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Davies-Evans has met the English press for the first time since his move back to the UK.

"I am glad to finally be here and start work. It's been a while since it was announced that I was moving to Sheffield Wednesday but luckily I had a few things to get on with at Cagliari so it went pretty quickly.

Now that I am here, there is a big job on and I will start immediatley on trying to change the fortunes of this fantastic club. I have been lucky enough to have a decent investment from Bernie (Ecclestone) which I hope shows that he has faith in me to bring in the right players. I have already shown him the list of players that I have agreed to sign and between the two of us, we feel that Sheffield Wednesday will be a force this year. It will take time throughout the season as changing a team that finished 11th last season to promotion candidates won't be done over night but I am confident that I can do it."

When asked about his friendly match against Leeds this week - Davies-Evans was quick to recognise his brothers pedigree.

"I was delighted that Dave got the Leeds job, He's a good manager that needed a decent size club and I think that after the way he changed Reggina around, he really deserved a big club like Leeds. It was great fun having him in the same league as me last season and it will be fantastic to not only have him in there again this season but also just miles down the road too. I will say however that I will be doing everything possible to get out of this division but I hope that soon enough - Dave can take Leeds United up too."

Harrington looking forward to new era

At a press conference today, West Brom manager Paul Harrington announced his shock at the recent revelation that the Abu Dhabi group were days away from sealing the deal for the midlands club.

"obviously, if its true its great news for this club, its hard to make that step up to the premiership without some kind of investment, and with the kind of financial backing that these guys bring, they can help put the club and the area on the footballing map. It could be exciting times for the fans of this club, and hopefully we can give them some early cheer on friday in the playoff final."

Harrington went on to say that he thought the gap between the Prem and the Championship.

"If we are to gain promotion on friday, it would be a year ahead of schedule and we would be on the back foot straight away, nobody will expect us to stay up and its up to everyone at the club to work hard next season, whatever division we are in. but if we do go up, i have a shortlist of players that can keep us there, of course we may have to put that on hold untill we know the situation in terms of money available. however i think everyone assosicated with the club can look forward to some exciting times!"

United rumours surface

Rumours coming out of Old Trafford suggest Manchester United are preparing an 11th hour swoop for ex-Recreativo Huelva manager Rob McFawn. McFawn recently left his position in Spain and has since applied for the vacant position at Reading, stating he would consider a move back to England or to another Spanish club.

Yet while Reading have been reportedly lining up a deal to offer McFawn, United have parted company with their own manager and are on the look out for a new manager with fresh ideas to help win something in the coming season.

Ranson talks to press

Ray Ranson, wantaway Coventry owner, has spoken to the press for the first time in weeks about his reasons behind the proposed changing of ownership at the Ricoh Arena, and the reported two bidders fighting for the club.

"Coventry was a good investment. They had potential and just needed someone sensible in charge to get them up the leagues. I don't regret buying the club, but I regret staying as long as I have. Mark Rollings has done well for this club on the field but our personalities have clashed badly off. Mark isn't a shy type of guy, he likes the attention. It was never going to work. I'm disappointed because I'd have loved to see the club I owned take on the Premiership but one of us had to go, and I made the decision for that person to be me."

Ranson went on to reveal the details of the bids he had received. Both bidders had simply been described earlier as similar. "The first bid was from a consortium of fans here in the Midlands. I think the reports of interest from the Middle East pushed them into getting together. The second bid has come in from another fan. He's based in London with his company but he grew up here. They have both made very similar offers so I just have to look at the details and see where to go from there. I hope to announce the new owner of the club before the week is out. My time at Coventry is over and it's about time someone else stepped in to handle what I can't."

Rollings issues investment warning

After hearing him want-away chairman, Ray Ranson, suggest a deal to sell the club was possibly hours away Sky Blues boss Mark Rollings issued clear prompt to get the deal done. Rollings has remained complimentary of his chairman, even under a barrage of press reports claiming their relationship was strained but is now obviously keen to get the deal finalised.

"It is getting to the stage where we are falling behind our rivals. I have my hands tied behind my back and have not been able to move on players, while watching many of my targets agree to move to other clubs, and in some cases to direct rivals. I do not question that Ray has the best interests of Coventry City at heart, but we need a resolution to this."

And Rollings also spent time discussing the rumours that the two bids on the table were both from Coventry City fans.

"I think it is great that we have the passion amongst the fans for them to want to make a difference at the club. We have a tremendous fan base, and that is obviously shining through here. However, I have heard rumours that Sulaiman Al-Fahim is due to take over at West Brom and obviously this highlights the task we may have next season. It was already going to be difficult to make the step up to the greatest league in the world without our probable rivals receiving tens of millions of pounds. The fact is that if that deal gets brokered we will need significant investment one way or another. We cannot, and will not, be able to compete if whoever invests doesnt have the capital to front operations. Realistically we are currently looking to compete with Watford, West Brom and probably Newcastle to stay in the league. Three go down and taking West Brom out of that equation it doesnt take a genius to work out the probable outcome."

Finally Rollings utilised the press conference to fire one last come and get us plee to possible West Brom bound Fahim.

"I urge him to consider Coventry City as a possible investment opportunity. We have limitless potential and have a recent record of escalating growth. Given the capital and opportunity we could become a top 4 English Premier League team! I am an ambitious manager, and I truly believe I can fulfil my ambitions here at Coventry City. Rumours are he is readying a bid for our midlands rivals West Brom, I urge him to come and talk to us first."

Rollings clearly believe his side are the better investment opportunity and a quick look at the statistics seem to back up his point. Coventry has a population in excess of 300,000 - more than double that of West Bromwich - while the Baggies have three significant rivals (Aston Villa, Birmingham and Wolves) all within a 20mile radius. Coventry meanwhile resides 22miles away from nearest rivals Birmingham and has a significantly increased catchment area to the South in Daventry.

Newcastle Manager hopes for Cash Boost

In an interview with BBC Sport Martin Turney said he hope to receive some funds to help boost Newcastle challenge in the premier league next year.

Martin Turney said " I have been given no money at all to spend on players in my 2 seasons at the club and feel that if they support me like they have done with other managers Keegan and Souness to name a few then Newcastle's League position can become alot different.

Sometimes Nemeses set for Bernabau clash

The focus of Spanish Football will be over Madrid today, but for once it wont be the Galactico Giants creating the news stories. For the small towns of Cadiz and Almeria todays play-off clash represents the final passage of a remarkable journey which has seen both clubs defy pre season predictions of a lowly finish. For one the journey will end in glory, and a flirtatious sojourn into the Spanish Primera! The match at the Spains premier footballing venue takes on particular significance for those in charge, with Arthur Gillion and Richard Marsh known to share a friendship outside football. This was encapsulated with Cadiz boss Marsh describing his play-off foe as a Sometimes nemesis in a cult saying which seems all the more applicable with todays match in charge. Neither manager will be pulling any punches, and there will be no favours given.

Both managers have remained coy on their team selection. Although speculation is mounting that Marsh may look to spring a tactical surprise, possibly plotting to crowd the midfield in a compact 3-5-2 formation which he will hope will nullify the ever-impressive Elipe Garcia. Marsh will be relying on star striker Daniel Sturridge to continue his goal scoring exploits possibly in partnership with fellow loanee Ishmael Miller who has been impressing in training.

Almeria seem unlikely to change much from their impressive semi final humbling of the improved Bilbao. Arthur Gillion has an exciting array of talent in attack and looks set to continue his three pronged strike force of Uche, Lupoli and Caturano. If Gillion did decide to change he could bring back in Fillippo Savi, who will have felt harshly dealt with missing the semi finals after impressing all season. This could lead to both managers fielding contrasting 3-5-2 formations with Marsh favouring a wider approach to Almerias passing football.

Both managers have been heavily linked to clubs around Europe, and the winning manager seems certain to come into high demand. It is thought Wigan, Reading and Southampton have earmarked Gillion as a possible target, while Marshs defiant and unlikely successes with a team who finished bottom of La Liga by some stretch last term have attracted the interest of under achieving Villarreal, who see the manager as the ideal candidate to turn around their ailing side, possible regardless of tonights outcome.

Cadiz manager Rich Marsh has refused to be drawn on any speculation regarding this afternoons match or his future.

"It's always flattering to be linked with teams of the calibre of Villareal but my entire focus is on taking my Cadiz team into the Primera today to join the likes of these teams. I've no doubt that after todays game I will sit down with the chairman and we will evaluate where we go from here, depending of course on which division we're in. But that's all for the future. For now it's all about the play off final."

Dressed in a dapper suit for Cadiz' first cup final in their history Marsh says he is ready for the challenge of Gillion and his impressive Almeria team.

"Arthur has put together a great team at Almeria with some real strength in depth, I absolutely want to win this game for myself, the team and the fans but the Almeria squad certainly looks better placed to cope in the Primera. As of tomorrow there will no centre backs at this club and that is something that I am working hard to remedy but I believe that we are going to have to dip into the academy."

"I'm not going to speculate on my formation for this game, suffice to say I'm considering a little tinkering to combat Almeria's obvious strengths. It's going to be a cracking game and for the neutral there's the added interest of having an Uche in both teams and both performing well this season."

Not much fighting talk from Marsh but a quiet confidence.

Ranson leaves Coventry

In the early hours of this morning, reporters outside the Ricoh Arena caught sight of out going chairman Ray Ranson taking his personal belongings out to his car. The man who was considering two rival offers for the club made no comment as he drove through the gathered reporters at the gates but his actions suggest he has left the club for the very last time.

Coventry are expected to hold a press conference later today to announce the new owner.

Chris Rodgers successful

Coventry held a brief press conference at their ground following the exit of ex-chairman Ray Ranson this morning. Present were a PR representative for the club, the new chairman Chris Rodgers, and Coventry assistant manager who stepped in while the manager was preparing for the evening match.

After a short introduction, Chris Rodgers addressed to reporters. "I'd like to welcome you all to a new era at the football club. I'm delighted to say that Ray and myself came to an agreement in the early hours of today and all documents have been signed and sealed. Everything is rosy at the club at the moment so nothing will change for now. We can all enjoy what has been a great season in the clubs history."

Reports from London where Rodgers is based at the headquarters of his business suggest that a few weeks ago, there was no plan at all to invest in Coventry. One newspaper ran with the story that Rodgers had moved quickly to avoid ownership of the club he supported as a boy going into foreign corporate hands.

Ascoli Reach Serie A!!!!

Ascoli 3-2 Genoa

Ascoli- Francesco Marigliano (13th min), Alhassan Bangura (117th min), Pietro Arcidiacono (118th min)

Genoa- Giuseppe Sculli (54th min),Di Maio sent off (66th min),Domenico Criscito sent off (81st min), Garibaldi (115th min)

Ascoli have beaten Genoa in a great spectacle and showed italian in football in its full glory.

The game finished in dramatic fashion with the normal 90 minutes up it was 1-1 and Genoa only had ten men but they somehow managed to get 2-1 with 5 minutes of extra time however this only proved to be the catalyst to beat the ten men an in two minutes Ascoli stormed into a 3-2 lead and held on for a famous victory.

The Ascoli fans and staff jumped out from their seat and the dugout to celebrate with the team and after half an hour delay in trying to get fans back to their seats they could give Ascoli players their medals and play-off winners trophy held aloft first by captain Riccard Corallo before the rest of the team the Chairmen of Ascoli and manager Jonny Sinclair were thrilled that they would be seeing their team in Serie A next surpassing the boards expectations of just finishing in 8th or higher they have stunned the rest of the league to get promotion.

Jonny Sinclair had a lot to say with the media after the game

'Its fantastic we've got promoted hats th moststressful as a manger i am sure to ever experience how we went 2-1 down to 9 men i'll never know and then to suddenly get the leveller with 3 minutes to go was a relief and then suddenly a minute later we were leader it was like a dream i cant describe that feeling it was amazing my hearts go out to Genoa fans it was a cruel way to lose and i do feel a lot of sympathy for them theyve done brilliantly with a manager for most of the season and i wish them well for next season now we can look to push on for next season of course ur aim will be to survive any else would be a bonus because we haven't got the money or depth to be doing anything else really I've got to say a big thank you to all the managers who have given us loans to help in this push for Serie A i can't thank them enough i mean 2 of the loanees twisted the game around in the last 5 minutes and from being Serie B again next season we've got got promoted because of them so i couldn't be more pleased i was fitting that Riccardo got to be the first to hold the trophy as he has been here for so long and even through the last couple of poor seasons has stuck by us and has been terrific for us this season and we all look forward to the challenge that awaits us my players can now relax for a bit and have a well earned break but they know they'll have to work twice as hard next season  the training pitch and matchdays to keep us afloat now its going to be stressful but hopefully enjoyable as well thanks a lot'

RE: Week 23

Moratti backs manager

Massimo Moratti has given his new manager his full support ahead of the new season. Best has built his career on turning around the failing Wolves and taking them into the play-offs this season before sealing a big move abroad to take over an aging Inter Milan team that has been stricken with mass retirements.

"We have to feel positive about the new season. We have a new manager with new ideas and that can only be a good thing. Maybe an Inter Milan team with a mix of title winning flair and English grit and determination is what we need to get back to the top.

I am investing £15 million into the club as of now. We will review the job Jamie manages to do with those funds later in the season but there is further money available if we feel it's needed. We don't want to invest much more at once because it needs to be spent wisely. Similarly if the team is really struggling then maybe more cash would be the wrong thing to change later in the season. We will review everything and see what comes of it all but the board are all enthusiastic."

Chairman hails miracle worker

Roberto Benigni has heaped praise on his manager Jonny Sinclair after the lowly Italian club gained promotion tonight to the big time. In an emotional interview whilst still on the pitch amid the mass celebrations, Benigni was rightly overwhelmed.

"What Jonny has done since joining us has been brilliant. If you look at our transfers we've spent very little and he knew there was little cash on offer when he joined us. We're a family club you could say, we very much look up to teams like Real Valladolid who are small time clubs punching above where the big boys expect them to be.

Some people questioned bringing the Cagliari manager over here but we knew Jonny could do a job, we just didn't expect this at all. The fans will be enjoying this long into the night, no, long into next week!! Who knows what next season will bring, we just have to enjoy times like this."

Al-Fahim makes Italian bid

The head of the Abu Dhabi group have announced they have submitted a firm bid to an Italian club and are waiting for an official decision. Al-Fahim said he was 'eager' to find out if they could begin working with the staff there to build a bright future.

"The bid was received today and we're waiting for them to get back to us. Hopefully it'll be a positive reply and we can put our investment plan into place."

As of yet, no club has confirmed to the media that they have received the bid.

Wells Speaks Up

Media shy Bristol City manager Stephen Wells has today taken the time to speak to the press about his first season in charge of the club.

"It's been fantastic. When I came here, people were talking about Bristol being a poor League 1 side, and we've really shown them what we can do. The players have worked their socks off."

Wells admits to be being a little bit surprised at the performance of the team, and knows how difficult next season will be.

"We've achieved something we may not really be prepared for. Going up to the Championship is obviously superb, but we'll need to work even harder than we did this season, if we want to stay up. We'll need to bring in a player or two, and hopefully the chairman will agree with that."

Fans will no doubt be glad to hear some comments from the manager, who has tended to keep himself to himself this season.

"People are a bit upset at my lack of media output, but I prefer to concentrate on getting the best out of my players, and making sure they're ready for the game. I'm a new manager, and have had to prove to the players that I know what I'm doing, and that they can trust me. Fair play to them, they've responded well."

Looking ahead to next season, Wells is quietly confident.

"We played Fulham in a friendly, and we managed to get a draw. That bodes well for the coming season. They're coming down into the Championship, and will be amongst the favourites to go up. It's a big result for us, and shows that we're not out of place in that league. The spine of the team is strong; we just need the finishing touches."

Make no mistake, Wells is targeting a mid-table finish next season, and on the evidence so far, he's likely to achieve it.

Abu Dhabi Ascoli bid rejected

Roberto Benigni confirmed in a brief discussion with a local TV reporter, that Ascoli had rejected an official bid from the Abu Dhabi group. Benigni admitted he wasn't sure how his manager would react to the news but said he had no interest in throwing away a family club to some big spenders. "We have a good youth system in the club and a manager not afraid to give the youngsters a game. The money might have helped the club next season but would we have been Ascoli with all that money? I say no. I want the manager to keep giving youngsters a first team chance. If we build a sustainable club we can achieve success at our own speed. I think we have everything in place."

When asked about whether he thought his decision had condemned his club to relegation before a ball was kicked, he quipped "You underestimate myself, my players, and my manager. If you all underestimate us, we can produce a shock."

This revelation now leaves the Abu Dhabi group still hunting a football club. Having made it clear they wanted to invest ready for the new season, speculation has been rekindled about where they will turn now.

Jonny Sinclair voiced his opinion of the recent development Roberto Benigni had rejected an offer from the Abu Dhabi Group.

Are you furious with your chairmen about this decision?

i can say hand on my heart not at all I agree what he has to say on the matter  im thrilled Roberto has so much faith in me and my players that we can survive without the money we have a brilliant relationship so it doesnt bother me whatsoever i mean yes of course the money would help but we've done brilliant without any so far and we've done great with what we have which is are young talent we have Mauro Pucello,Mauro Sosi,Francesco Marigliano,Kasper Schemichel, Oliver N'Siabamfumu and we've sold a couple which i'll always reject but it was needed to be done at the time we have a couple more coming in with James and Brunty coming in to do a job on either flank. But what he says is true we are a family club and that would be ruined my taking there money but i have to thank the Abu Dhabi group for there offer because it shows the club is moving in the right direction if people are picking us to invest in us we must be doing something right.

What do you think your fans will feel about this?

I hope they can understand Roberto's decisions for doing it and the reason he rejected the offer is because he loves the club the way its structured at the moment if we had all this money it would be difficult for my young players to get in the team and that isnt what we want its far more rewarded building up a player than it is just buying them i hope they can take this positively i don't want them getting angry about this situation because we've just got promotion we should all be pleased how well we're doing and how other people like the Abu Dhabi group are taking notice

But without this money you're surely going to get relegated?

I don't think that's a certainity no one expected to us to go up but we did of course this will be much more difficult but i think me, Roberto, the fans and the players would rather have it that way, you underestimate my players a lot of them are young and they fear nobody and think they can beat everybody and i like the confidence they have and i honestly think we can stay up next season with a lot of hard effort from everyone linked at the club we can do it why do people think that if we had money we would be better look at Sheffield Wednesday they were invested last year and they did terrible with the money and ended up in the same position as they did without the money of course id do expect Steve to do a much better job with this money now he is in charge

Ok thanks for speaking us today Jonny

No problem, cheers
