Inter Milan kept in touch with the top four after coming from behind to win 3-2 against strugglers Lazio. It was star striker Ibrahimovic who bagged a late double as well as setting up the first, to help limit the criticism aimed at the team for another week. Jamie Best walked into the delicate situation in pre-season and has begun changing the aging squad already but results have faltered and fans used to title chases are struggling to come to terms with the drop down the league.
Genoa manager told to cut wages
Following purchases of Thierry Henry and Riquelme, and after watching the team smash their opponents in the league this season, Al-Fahim told reporters outside the ground that he expected the wage bill to now be cut. "The squad is at its maximum now. Henry and Riquelme have almost doubled the wage bill on their own so I think the manager will have to sell some of the spare wheels now."
Serie B hero Sculli may be the first to be sold. He built a career for himself as Chievo's star forward but moved to Genoa after Chievo reached Serie A on the back of his goals. Having been Genoa's lead forward for seasons now, it looks like his place is lost to Henry.
After their derby win against league and local rivals Leeds United, manager Steve Davies-Evans told waiting journalists that although he was delighted to get his first win, a clean sheet and winning mentality is now what's needed if the Owls are to be successful this season.
Q - "Steve, You must be delighted to get your first win of the season?" SDE - "Yeah obviously we wanted to win this game to kick start the season off and hopefully that is what will happen now"
Q - "And how much sweeter is it to get one over on your brother?" SDE - "To be honest, it's bitter/sweet as always, it's great to get your first win but when you see how gutted your own brother is by the result, it's not too easy to enjoy it. We both went into this game treating it as purely another game and our family ties went out the window for 90 minutes. Now Dave is happy for me getting the win and I am equally gutted that he has lost a game. I suppose that it's just the fact that we are close as brothers."
Q - "Steve, you now face Charlton who picked up a very useful point at home to your rivals Sunderland this week. Do you expect them to follow similar tactics against you?" SDE - "Well having seen the highlights, it seems as though Charlton parked the peverbial 'bus' infront of the goal and managed to nick a draw. The fact that we will be at home makes me think that they probably will do the same. It will be up to us to sit down this week and analyse how to get past them. We might have to be patient in this game but I am confident that we will be able to get a positive result. "
Q - "We see that you have brought in 2 players from Barcelona this week, is this through your tie-up with Adam?" SDE - "Yeah it is. He has been good enough to loan us Jonny Evans until half way through the season. I think Jonny will help sure up our defence even more and It will be good to see him in the blue and white. Sam Dalla Bonna is a player that I feel will give us real cutting edge. He has played superb for Barcelona this season so far and I hope that he can continue to do that for us. Obviously we have lost Liam Miller but I am hoping that we can do something to plug the gap that Liam has left."
Q - "So, does that mean you will be bringing in more faces?" SDE - "Yeah I think that's a fair thing to say. Although we won this week, we are far from the finished article and I believe that we can bring in the players that will give us the best oppertunity to succeed this season."
Blades boss Andy Fletcher spent 5 brief minutes this week after training for their forthcoming trip to Birmingham.
" The lads have worked hard this week and are determined to get something from what will be a tough trip to Birmingham. The blues are probably in a lower division than they should be, they seem to have started with some massive results and have yet to concede a goal.
We will be there, as every game to try and upset the apple cart, we have had to sell to buy and this week sees the impending arrival of two new signings who will add quality to the team. We also have another player leaving us for pastures new and we wish Chris Armstrong all the best in Spain. Most lads want to play and we couldn't offer Chris first team football guarantees here at Bramall Lane.
I'm excited about next week when I can introduce the new players to the squad and its likely they will get their home debuts against Wolves. Our supporters have been fantastic this season, I think they can see what the long term plan is."
