Gazzetta got an exclusive interview with Huw Evans of struggling Serie A side Brescia. After surviving against the odds in Serie A last season Brescia have failed to pick up a single point in the opening month of the season.
(Q) How disappointed are you Huw with the start to the season you've made?
(A) It has been a difficult start and Serie A is even tougher this season. The fixtures have not fallen that kindly with a number of games against the top 4 or 5 teams already but I am particularly disappointed with our performances and and how our defence has been exposed so ruthlessly.
(Q) You opted to turn down a move away from Brescia in favour of extending your contract with Brescia. Do you regret your decision.
(A) I was very flattered with the offers of managing other clubs but I felt at the time it was the right decision to stay with Brescia and repay the faith and loyalty of the chairman and fans. I have great relationship with my chairman, fans and players and maintain that at the time it was the correct decision to stay with Brescia.
(Q) Kamil Krol was labelled a star for the future after progressing through the youth ranks but after a brief spell in the team you seem to have opted for more experienced strikers. Does Krol have a future at Brescia or is he available to a move now?
(A) Kamil Krol is a player I have great hopes for. It depends on the formation I opt for and at the moment the fact that our defence is leaking goals is not helping his cause. Simone del Nero and Diomansy Kamara are both very good strikers and was happy with their return last year but will be looking to Kamil to progress this season and gain further experience. Of course if the right offer is made for any of our players that will enable us to strenghthen in other areas then we will sell.
(Q) Do you think Brescia can survive this season again against the odds or is this a season too far for the current group of players?
(A) I am confident that we can stay up again this season although it will be very difficult. We will need to strenghten, especially in defence, and will be looking to buy or loan some quality defenders. If we can make make some signings then we will have a good shout. My fellow managers will see that our defence is not that strong and if I can be loaned any fringe defenders they will of course be played and gain invaluable experience of playing in Serie A. Our squad is quite large and will be looking to offload some of our fringe players and will be inviting offers for those players so I can work with a core of first team players.
(Q) Do you still see your future at Brescia or are you reassessing your options?
(A) I won't hide the fact that I am an ambitious manager and always looking to improve myself. The Chairman himself will not deny that financial resources at Brescia are not as they are in many of the larger clubs hence why it will always be difficult to challenge for the top honours. I am however happy at Brescia and committed to helping them survive again this season but as they say "Never say never".
