A question for Rich really but all comments welcome
We have all discussed this in the old FA and most probably the new one as well but Im not getting any younger and the memory is starting to fade so just wanted to catch up on the most recent state of play in terms of feasibility / how to work into the game engine etc etc
The much talked about multi position players - think of Robin Van Persie (LM, AMC, ST), Jamie Carragher (LB, CB, RB) or Tim Cahill and Phil Jagielka at Everton (pretty much any position under the sun lol)
So two questions spring to mind
1. Do managers want such a thing? And will they accept a trade off for the privelege?
2. How can it be worked into the game engine if signed off by Rich?
What I propose (and this is very much up for discussion) is that most of this "play anywhere" type of players are older rather than younger. There are exceptions obviously such as Johan Djorou and Alex Song who can play in about 10 positions each but maybe we could limit this in the game to the more established players
Take Alex Song for example and say he is introduced to the game as the following
CM Alex Song Age 22 7-6-6-4
Perhaps one way of Rich introducing it would be to offer the manager concerned the choice. He can turn into a CM, CB multi player BUT CANNOT IMPROVE STAT WISE or he can stay as he is perhaps with the manager invovled having a chance to say what position he would prefer? Just thinking out loud really on this - but perhaps this choice might also be chargeable to the club ie If you want to pick a position out of 2 you pay FA £1m?
So CM Alex Song 22 7-6-4-4 can stay as he is and increase according to potiential and play points earned or turn into
CM / CB Alex Song 22 7-6-4-4 and not have the potiential to increase
or for a £1m fee can change to a CB Alex Song 22 7-6-6-4 if the manager prefers
thats my thoughts anyway.............................
The only downside I can see is the extra work invovled for Rich initially - but new youth is only twice a season. Perhaps we can even take the work off his hands and have a panel that can handle all the negotiations and then pass on for Rich to implement? (although I can see this having difficulties in terms of "dodgyness" and unscruplous behaviour from some managers)
In terms of game implementation doing it this way - the initial extra work for Rich is then negating by simply adding his extra position to the existing squad sheet and the manager can pick him as normal in either position via the teamsheet. No new columns or game engine updates are needed and it all sounds simple in my head lol
Anyway - be keen to hear everyones thoughts on the matter as its been a while since it came up and id like to seriously try and work it out as a future FA improvement as I think it would be excellent for giving more tactical options to managers on match day and will also have interesting knock on effects to team building and transfer prices
Rich - If this is a non starter for any reason I havent mentioned perhaps you can chip in and say so so we all dont waste time trying to work out the details lol
cheers all - and ill shut up now!

Sorry..em, but the idiot i am, without asking, went ahead and played my defensive mid in the centre back position, which now i know is nuts in the game.. so, needless to say, i lost a couple games due to that... imagine, 2 cbs.. destruction..
but again, the complainer that i am.. thinks it would make the game more competitive for those of us with no cash.. ajam.. as right now the shortage of some positions have led managers to sell players in those at unscrupulous prices
Quite like the idea although I think that there is probably a lot of work for Rich involved as it would get confusing regarding checking/tracking prices and deals put through.
Perhaps Rich can let us have his views on whether its feasible?
This was mentioned before yes: http://footballacademyevo.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=112202
I could incorporate players who can play across the pitch ie: DEF could play either fullback or centreback, and MID could play across the middle. I only suggest this as the term needs to be small enough to fit into the box - the box sizes are all important as they're worked into the system itself and making them bigger presents an issue.
So the thing people will need to think about is:
- Do you want players being DEF, or MID therefore playing across the pitch, or do you want them specific to 2 positions eg. RB/LB
- Are you happy for utility players to cost a lot more, which could price smaller clubs out of the market for them? There has to be some downside to having these players, the obvious being price although open to suggestions.
Keep it as it is, Its makes the transfers more difficult at the mo, as you have to fill all positions, if you went DEF MID ATT it will get boring as you will lose your LB, RB, RM etc etc I disagree with this idea.
If you look back, it would be only for utility players. The majority, say 99% of players, would remain in the current system of GK, RB, CB, LB, RM, CM, LM, ST, but for the 1% representing utility players, they could potentially cover more than one position.
In that case i think it will work, as long as we keep the foundations of the game any imrovement is a bonus. I do think though that it would only benefit the big clubs with cash as these players would be more expensive. Us minnows would have to scrap for every penny to get these sort of players just like the scouting market. Cheers
