Forest & Leeds play out thriller at the City Ground
Nottingham Forest and Leeds United produced a likely candidate for game of the season in just week 5 of the season as a last minute strike from Leeds winger Ross Wallace gave the Elland Road outfit all three points in what could be a very important victory come the end of the season. We caught up with a devastated Forest manager Steve Davies-Evans at his post match press conference.
Media - Steve, I can't imagine that it's ever easy to take when you lose in that manner?
SDE - No it's not. I've got a very down dressing room at the moment but I've just told them that they should be so proud of what they have just done. We have just pushed what I feel is the out and out best team in that league to the last minute and that shows how far we are progressing.
Media - You mentioned during the week that you defence would have to be strong, in the end they weren't and do you feel that's what cost you.
SDE - Well it's hard to criticise anyone but on paper, we have conceeded four goals and we scored 3 so yeah that's cost us if you look at it in black and white. Leeds Utd have already scored four goals this season and they havent scored less than 3 so we shouldnt be down on ourselves.
Media - Will it be hard to pick the team up now ready foor your trip to Fulham?
SDE - No I will give the players the day off tomorrow so they can spend some time with their families and rest up abit and will will go again on Monday and look to get this defeat out of our system at the first attempt.
Media - What does it say about your teams character that they kept on going and going?
SDE - Yeah and they deserve to be praised for it as I thought they were excellent. After going 3-2 behind, it would have been so easy for us to buckle and just accept that we were going to lose but this young team never know when they are beaten and we came back with an 89th minute equaliser. It wasn't goodenough though and we were punished.
Media - Yeah you can't allow teams like Leeds to get a sniff can you?
SDE - Not at all and we are disappointed that we switched off at the end and cost us what would have been a fantastic draw. I have to praise Leeds United though and the character that Dave has obviously given them. They kept fighting back and they were down twice and came back to get the win. I think that could be a huge 3 points come the final tally at the end of the season. We gave it all but at the end of the game, we were beaten by a truly great team.
Media - Finally Steve, how pleased were you to see another debut goal and this time Redondo?
SDE - Well it's always ideal if you can bring a player in and he hits the ground running and we were delighted that he managed to get a goal but he;s just said to me that it means nothing as we didnt get the the positive result we wanted and that says alot about these kids. We were also delighted that Tomas set up Redondo and Aaron [Ramsey] managed to get a goal and an assist. Hopefully these boys will be pumped up for the trip to Fulham now.

"I'm disappointed we didnt take all 3 points this weekend at Charlton, it says it all when the Charlton GK is the man of the match, Aaron Lee-Barrett was superb for them, in fact I may try and buy him !!!"
I rested Luis Garcia and maybe it was a step too far to play the relatively inexperienced due of Ben Sahar and Colin Marrison, we will review what went wrong in training this week and look to ensure we dont fall down again on the goals front.
Otherwise my lads created plenty and the midfield performed particulalrly well, I can take many positives from this, I'm still disapointed however we didnt push for the top two slots in the league."

Blackburn owner John Williams has fallen out with manager Amilcar Vasquez over his disregard for the club stating current form is more down to the assistant manager, and will make a surprise approach for Blackburn fan Steve Davies-Evans before sacking Vasquez.
Nottingham Forest manager Steve Davies-Evans has moved quickly to dismiss rumours that state he is about to take over the helm at Blackburn Rovers. The Welshman who only joined Forest at the end of last season from Sheffield Wednesday is a Blackburn Rovers fan but doesn't see any truth in the recent rumours.
Speaking on the phone to Millie Clode on Sky Sports news this morning.....
Millie: Steve, Can you confirm or deny stories this morning regarding you joining Blackburn Rovers.
SDE - Yeah I can confirm that they are not true. I have had no contact from Blackburn Rovers and if I am honest, I fully don't expect to. They are a huge club and I am obviously flattered to be linked to them as a fan but I don't think that there is any truth.
Millie: Is it a club that you would like to manage one day Steve?
SDE - Well maybe someday dependant on circumstances then yeah I'd love to manage them. Everyone knows that I have strong links to both Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers and I think any boy-hood fan would love to manage their teams but as I say, I am Forest manager so there is nothing to talk about.
Millie: If Blackburn Rovers were to come in for you now, would you like to speak to them?
SDE - To be honest, thats totally hypothetical Millie, As far as I am aware, my chairman hasn't had any contact from them and until I am told otherwise, I won't be thinking about. Lets not forget also that Blackburn currently have a manager and a good guy in Amilcar. He gained promotion for them last season after a couple of tough seasons so I think this may just me media speculating but I think it's unfair on Beli [Amilcar Vasquez] to talk about a position that he is currently in.
Millie: So what would you say to Nottingham Forest fans that are watching this, this morning?
SDE- I'd say not to worry about speculation. If, and it's a huge if Blackburn Rovers did come in for me, then I would sit down with my chairman and we would discuss things but that hasnt happened so I am totally focused on Nottingham Forest Football Club and the plans that I have put in place for the future. We have a game against Fulham next weekend and I fully expect to be in charge for that game.
Millie: Well thanks for taking time out Steve to speak to us.
Thomas Sorensen believes his manager Liam Riste is the manager of the month following a number of battling matches in their first month in the Premiership.
Liam Riste spoke today about this comment:
" This comment proves that my boys are still confident in our club, as I had feared that they would be disheartened by our early league postion. I am glad that they understand the horrid fixture list given to us early on; but they all have risen to the challenge and are showing the determination that we need to survive.
As much as it pleases me to know that Tommo believes I should get the Manager of the Month Award, I think that it would be a little unfair to other managers that are flying high and getting great results. As much as I hate to admit it, I feel that we lost 2 points at Blackburn and it is always playing back on my mind. Apart from that, we as a team have been strong minded and have battled so hard in our first month in the top flight. Our next few games may not be as tough, but I can't see our efforts dropping at all. "
The board at Juventus are concerned with the poor start to the season and are preparing to meet with the manager to discuss the situation but deny these will be 'crisis talks'.
Juve manager Steve Jenkins dismissed the recent reports of boardroom concerns at the Stadio Olimpico as arising from a lack of entertaining football to report on in the English and Spanish leagues. "At such times journalists always look to make news where none exists".
He described the good start by a number of clubs in Serie A as " ...... thrashing about by minnows desperate to gain some points early on by throwing all their resources at the wall and hoping some will stick". He predicted the falling away of many of these wannabe giants as their aging squads imploded under the pressure. "The season is a marathon not a sprint" was his parting comment on this topic.
Spurs boss Richard Jefferies was shocked to lose at home to Blackburn in a game dominated by Spurs from start to finish. He said " We completely out played them but managed to lose the game, they had four shots on target and scored three goals" He added "My team played some lovely flowing football once again but flattered to decieve and ended up losing again, hopefully the chairman will see fit to give me a few quid to strengthen the squad and enable me to challenge the top teams, my players are doing very well and the team spirit is great but would be just nice to go out and get that little bit of quality"
Inter Milan manager Jamie Best talks about the start of the season
Jamie you sit in 3rd at the moment and unbeaten, you must be pleased with the start you have made?
I am to some degree yes, the draws we have had were against the stronger teams, Juventus, AC Milan and Sampdoria last weekend so i cant be disappointed really. I just hope we can start to turn some of these draws into wins and maintain the promising start to finish in the European places as this is what the fans want to see.
Genoa sit at the top of the table, are you surprised by their amazing start?
To some degree maybe but when you get the ridiculous investment that they did then i think it's quite easy to buy the league, you can buy four or five top players but i'm not sure how they'll perform towards the end of the season when the older players get a bit tired, it's a long season. Fair play to Chris though he has spent wisely and has so far delivered what the owners and chairman want so credit must go to him for that.
Rumours circulating indicate that Van der Vaart will be sold, can you confirm this?
I can confirm that a fee has been agreed in principle for the player and it's just the loose ends that are being tied up, it's a shame to lose such an influential player but i feel i am still improving the squad and unfortunately i must sell to buy, the fee we are getting for him is very substantial though and will go a long way i hope in the continuous development of the team. I also have Toulalan and O'hara in now which will help cover the loss of Rafael while we build.
Is this transfer simply just to gain funds for the scouting window?
No, not at all. the manager and club i have dealt with have been chasing Rafael for a while now and until now i have refused to sell but they have made an improved offer and it's one too good to refuse. I have a scout in Germany but whether i take up the option to bid on those players found remains to be seen, the timing is purely coincidental.
Thanks for your time Jamie

AC Milan manager Luke Coakley today backed Mark Rollings comments regarding the quality of manager in Italy and believes the best is yet to come.
"The quality of manager in Italy is of a very high standard and only the best will survive here. I do think the quality of playing squads are not as high as in Spain and England and that has been shown with the results in Europe in recent years but times are changing. A few years ago the Italian clubs seemed to grow old together and the league was on its knees in my opinion. Now a new generation of fans are into Italian football and with a good strong bunch of managers looking to bring new life into the league and I believe the league is getting stronger and fresher and over time will again become the top league in European and world football.
On Genoa
Some have dismissed Chris Ratcliff performance at Genoa but for me he has done a great job, he is in a highly pressurised situation and although Genoa have spent a lot of money the progress they have made is astonishing considering where they were just a year ago. Its very easy to spend money and have nothing to show for it just ask Bernie the Sheffield Wednesday chairman, but they do have quality at Genoa now. Ill be honest and say I didnt expect Genoa to be fighting for the title this season but they are top and looking strong, the age of the team may mean they slip away towards the end but who knows what will be invested at the half season point. I find it very fascinating to watch and I think the investment has given an extra exciting edge to Serie A which is very positive. I dont see there progress as a bad thing for Serie A, infact I welcome the challenge and at the end of the day no matter how much money they spend AC Milan will always be the biggest club in Italy.
Scouting Market purchases are planned
We have quite a lot of money to spend and we have already targeted players in Germany and have the cash available to purchase them. The Brazil scouting mission was a bit of a wasted journey to be honest as we couldnt find what we were looking for but we hope to add to the squad over the coming weeks, we may see a high turn over in players as we push on for the season.
On rumours that Huw Evans is set to link up with Milan
Huw is a friend but I know nothing about him joining up with Milan, he has been very loyal to Brescia so I would be surprised if he took a role that wasnt of manager.

Blades Team News Ahead of this Weekends Fixture against Wolves.
Andy Fletcher has again the luxury of selecting a squad from a fully fit team. Paul Smith is expected to keep his place between the sticks after an outstanding start to the new campaign. Smith has only conceded 5 goals this season, the best tally in the Top 6 teams.
Loanee Matthew Briggs is in contention and Ben Sahar, on loan from Cheslea will be looking to open his scoring account at Bramall Lane.
Dependable midfield duo Juanito and Quinn will be hoping to keep their central partnerhsip going and LB Moretti would be very unlucky to lose his berth after being selected as the clubs player of the month,
Fletcher is always keen to show the versatility of his Sheffield United side and a formation is hard to predict although home starts could mean a more attacking look to the side.
Striker Danny Webber is set to remain on the fringe again after his vocal disappointment at not yet getting a start in Season 4. Andy Fletcher may not be content with the undertones coming from Webber and a sharp exit may be on the cards if a club can be found.
Fletcher is keen to extend the gap between the teams pushing for a play off berth and the Top 6, Fletcher said.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Nottingham Forest manager Steve Davies-Evans has answered questions from the press and has admitted that his side will have to stop Fulham stiker Bjorn Runstrom if they are to get a result this week.
Media - Steve, after two home games recently how much of a different proposition are Fulham at Craven Cottage?
SDE - Well they're a tough team and there's no doubt about that. I think they were very unlucky last week when they lost to Southampton and it shows that they have undoubted quality in their side.
Media - After the Leeds game, is this a game that you feel you can get something from?
SDE - Well I thought we could get something from the Leeds game and as we entered the 90th minute, it looked like I was right but I think it's important that we show our bouncebackability now and put in a good performance against Fulham.
Media - Dean Lea**** has come in and could well face one of his old sides, how important will his precence be in that defence?
SDE - Well hopefully it will be a big improvement. I'm hoping that he helps the other around him defend strongly. It's something we have looked at and hopefully we will add more strength there after this week.
Media - Have you had a good look at Fulham and if so, where you think they can cause you problems?
SDE - Yeah we've done our work and I've had a look at their side and a nummber of possible formations and tactics they may use against us. I think that we know how they will play and we have worked on the key areas of the field where we will need to be strong if we are to get a positive result. I think that their main danger man is probably Bjorn Runstrom as he's been in decent form and has 3 goals and 3 assists from 6 games so if we can keep him quiet then we will have a better chance.
Media - Alot has been made of Terry Manifolds placement at the bottem of the recently published FA Manager Index. What were you're thoughts on the list?
SDE - Well, it's a difficult one to comment on. The people who comprise these lists obviously felt that Terry deserved to be bottem. I personally think that he was quite unlucky to be there as there are one or two more candidates that could have been given that placement but Terry will bounce back from that. He's a good manager and an even better guy so I can only imagine that he will be going all out to prove those people wrong and that means we will have to be even more on our game as he will target us to get a win.

When we caught up with Terry Manifold, manager of troubled Fulham, he told us he is really looking forward to the game with Nottingham Forest. "When I lived in West Bridgford I was a season ticket holder." "It will be great to welcome Steve and the team to Craven Cottage." When asked if Steve Davies-Evans would pose any problems he replied, "I can promise it will be close." "We don't have anything to lose." With that final remark he left for training ground with a wink and a smile.
media shy Wolves manager Adam Davies has been talking with the Sun today about the rumors linking him with a move to Catania
I Just would like to let the Wovles chairman and fans know that i have not heard anything from the Catania chairman about the job and i will carrying out the rest of my deal that i have with Wolves, but if the Catania chairman came knocking on my door about the job i will listen to what he has say and then i will think about what the best thing to do for Wolves and for me
MEDIA: What is your though of media shy Adam Davies comment earlier?
I think it is great the Wolves manager has spoken, Im just hoping at this moment in time he keeps head together and focuses on the plan in hand and not the future yet.
MEDIA: Let just hope he proves critics wrong. Could you give us an intake on the recent events at the club.
Well these last few weeks have been trials of player, Formations etc.. Im receiving help from managers which I am grateful
MEDIA: Do you have any uprising starts that could come through the rank to be world class players.
Yes, The club has a couple of player at a young age, There has been some interest but I would like them to develop with me, But if a good offer comes then I will consider it
