Week 16

Never a dull moment in Milan.

AC Milan continued there erratic form with a 5-3 win over Lazio at the San Siro.

Luke you must be impressed with the comeback spirit of the team after going behind in this game a number of times?

We have always had great team spirit here and a good work ethic at the club.  If you look at the stats we have come back in many games this season so it isnt surprising.  Ideally we would keep it a bit tighter in the opening stages of games and not gift the opposition goals but we play attacking football and it sometimes leaves us a little open at the back.

Although impressive getting five goals how much of a concern is the way you have conceded three goals?

Lets start with a positive though shall we, we scored five goals which is always a big big plus for any team in any league  and the quality of goals was exciting, they were very well crafted.  I thought Plasmati stood out tonight, luckily for me he goes under a lot of other managers radars but he gets so many goals and a lot of assists, he is one of those players you cant sell for any price despite being near the top if not top of the scoring chart in Italy.

And the goals conceded?

Well that is something we need to look at as we have been conceding far too many goals this season.  We now have two very good centre backs at the club so maybe its the formation we have been playing or maybe we dont have enough defensive cover in midfield.  Im not sure but it is something we will look at but as long as we are winning then thats all that matters.  We have only lost one game this season in the league and in the semi final of the Italian cup so still plenty to play for.

Recent signing Briand had an impressive debut last week and was loaned out straight away to the annoyance of some fans. What was the thinking of the signing?

Well we are trying to win the league and cup while balancing having a great future at Milan so its never easy to please everyone.   We brought in Palermo as a short term solution and brought in Briand as a medium and long term solution so I think the balance is right.   We could have kept Briand here he would have got involved in quite a few games but I felt the chance to give him all the game for the rest of the season, which he will at Sampdoria was more important.  We also have Jose Mari at the club on loan who is yet to start a game for us so we have cover.

So do you plan any further signings before the transfer window closes?

We have a limited budget at the moment so I dont see anything exciting happening with permanent transfers except potentially a back up keeper coming in.  We are bringing in an experienced midfielder in this week and Zambrotta will be joining us the following week so that gives us a bit of depth in key positions.  We also remember we have close to forty million pounds worth of players out on loan gaining much needed experience to things are very bright at Milan.

Sampdoria v Atalanta

Atalanta manager Terry Manifold left the match beaming from ear to ear following the much improved performance of the team and away from home.

Press.

You must be very pleased watching the match unfold today?

TM.

Tremendous. When Sampdoria scored in the first 2 minutes I thought we were in for another bad day. When the next one went in I was beginning to feel sick. But, the 27 minute effort from Skacel was a real uplift, to be followed by the equaliser on 32 minutes. Skacel is someone I have brought in since I arrived and he is just starting to settle. Talamontis goal was his first for the club this season and one he will never forget. I must say that when we lost Gentili through suspension I wondered how we would cope. It may well be that the whole team rely on him too much and when he is out they have to pick up their game. It was not a pretty game of football but, a point is a point. Palermo did not win today so it is a point in the right direction.

Press.

You play Messina at home next week how do you see that going?

TM.

Messina put up a real fight against Juventus before going down, and they will come to us in good spirits. We have got to continue with the progress and hope we can pick up three points.

Press.

Have you any plans to strengthen the side?

TM.

I am always looking at trying to improve the team and I have been very busy. It is not easy when you havent a lot of room to bargain without funds or an abundance of players you can do without. I will be on the phone in the morning and who knows!

With that a much happier manager got into his ford escort and drove off.

Arsenal players were taunted by West Ham fans at the London derby this weekend as the Gunners dropped yet more points in a 2-2 stalemate.

Luis Marti Mingarro has completed the purchase of debt riddled Cadiz for reportedly less than £1 million.

Cadiz have arranged a bank loan to cover their debts and exit administration however they are likely to owe the bank in excess of £20 million come the end of the season without investment or player sales.

Espanyol's reported takeover has stalled amid confusion about who will take over the vacant managerial position.

Ex-Manchester United favourite Patrice Evra has urged Simon Newcombe to make the move to the La Liga side to help Espanyol push on this season.

However team mate Park Ji-Sung wants his old manager Craig Radford to move away from the English giants Manchester United and join a number of ex-United players at the Spanish club.

Everton are considering an approach for struggling Real Mallorca boss Mark Galeozzi.

Fernando Torres believes Fiorentina have the attacking prowess and tactical adventure under Rob O'Brien to win Serie A this season.

Ex-AC Milan legend Cafu has tipped recently appointed manager Simon Burnett for big things next season saying "he is showing the raw potential to outgrow Preston as soon as the end of this season."

Alan Smith has told journalists his decision to join West Brom was driven by the chance to play under manager Gareth Gardner who he believes can extend his playing career in the top flight.

Breaking News

Gianpaolo Pazzini has handed in a transfer request at Portsmouth. The hitman has 7 goals and 7 assists in 11 Championship matches this season and his contributions have dragged an otherwise average Portsmouth side into play-off contention. However speculation about his future has increased in the last 2 weeks on the South coast and reports coming from Spain that two Spanish clubs have made an approach for his services have been met with unease by fans. Pazzini has wasted no time in stating his intent claiming he "sees his future at a higher level than the Championship."

Meanwhile reports coming out of the Midlands suggest West Brom have accepted an offer from an unnamed Spanish side for young striker Arturo Lupoli although nothing has yet been confirmed. It is widely known that his ex-manager at West Brom now at Atletico Madrid Paul Harrington is a big fan of the young striker.

Ascoli win three on the bounce gives Sinclair real hope of promotion

Jonny you must be delighted with you 3-2 win against Livorno

Yes, thrilled its makes it three wins in a row in the league and its all starting to come together nicely for us now we just need to keep the wins going to make sure we're are at least in the play-offs and maybe even try and challenge Udinese for
2nd spot

Jonny you've been busy in the transfer market in recent weeks with Giuseppe Bellusci and Mauro Sosi leaving the club how do think this effect the team?

To be honest it was a difficult decision selling the pair but Giuseppe has be affected by all the hype surrounding him and that has been affecting his game so i thought it'd be best for him to move on and we got Khalid Boulahrouz out of the deal from Chelsea and he has buckets of quality and experience and he has already scored on his debut which shows me it was a good decision.

The reason i sold Mauro Sosi was because he wasn't performing well he will be the first to admit he hasn't played well this season and I felt he should move on to kick start his career again and at Roma which is a massive club and i hope Glenn can get the best out of him

Jonny, Frederic Kanoute got his long awaited debut why hasn't he played until this week?

Simple while Frederic is of course a quality player he is 35 and with that age his fitness levels aren't quite what they used to be and the fact he hasplayed so many games already with Parma this season he needed a couple of weeks to get his fitness upto the levels to last the 90 minutes

Michele De Bellis has signed on loan this week and he says he is delighted to be back in italy and vows to helps you out in your bid for promotion

Thats what i like to hear players who are willing to fight for our cause Michele has a lot of quality i have been watching him since the start of the season when he made his breakthrough at Messina and im delighted to have got him on loan and my midfield now has the right balance and im really confident we can beat any team now in this league if we put our minds to it

Thanks for speaking to us today Jonny

No problem at all Thanks

Reports in Italy suggest that the Torino management and players have swine flu!

Speaking through the modern day telephone, Ashley Davies gave this short speech.

Gutted, Absolute gutted. The 1-0 loss to Cagliari was due to flu in the camp, Not swine flu though! It wasnt until last minute that we had to put some players into isolation and put players out of there position, They managed to hold of Caglirari but we didnt produce any efforts atall, This is just a one of thing, Hopefully we can all be ready for next week

Napoli manager staying out of press spotlight

Manager of Napoli JD Jaques has not made himself available for comment following his sides 1-1 draw with rivals Empoli at home this week. There is some speculation regarding the team and manager this week, but JD Jaques has not been available for comment. His side are just outside the playoffs, and it is believed that a couple of players are on their way in to boost the squad for the end of season push.

In the past the manager has not been as outspoken as others regarding the lack of investment at the club, probably because both he and his Chairman have publicly criticised Genoa for trying to buy the Italian Championship. However, rumours are that the manager does not hold out a lot of hope that the club will be able to progress radically without further investment.

Mr Jaques lack of comments on the recent speculation linking him with Portsmouth have fuelled speculation that he may be thinking of leaving. This is especailly as a result of him not normally being shy with the media. Some reports in La Gazetta are that if he does leave he may be on his way to an English team, but rumours are that Portsmouth may not be his first choice club.

RE: Week 16

London Shuffle

Reports on a late night football chat station have claimed that a dramatic turnaround in the English capital is right around the corner. Spurs manager is reportedly unhappy with the clubs progress as they battle relegation this season and has had talks with Arsenal manager Simon Newcombe about replacing existing Spurs boss Richard Jefferies. It is widely known that Simon Newcombe has been under pressure at Arsenal for some time now struggling season after season to live up to the expectations of challenging for silverware. Many had thought a move to Villarreal or Espanyol was on the cards however recent speculation has linked him with a move to Watford or Newcastle in the Championship as they look to regain Premiership status.

As yet another twist in the saga, he has now been linked to his struggling rivals position before Spurs have even commented on the speculation that their manager is under pressure. If Newcombe was to make the move within London, it would no doubt split the fans down the middle over the issue of loyalty

Torino must work harder

Urbano Cairo the chairman of lowly Italian club Torino has urged his manager to forget the world outside and concentrate on his team. Ashley Davies has recently been caught up in media issues appearing to enjoy the brief straws of limelight he grabs but the chairman has issued a word of caution.

"Ashley needs to prove himself and the results have been nothing more than average here. A statement on the pitch at a club like this is worth more than any headline space in the media right now in his fledgling career. It is at small clubs like this that managers have the change to engrain themselves into the pages of history that fans here will remember long into the future. He shouldn't waste that chance."

New signing demands improvements

Yohann Gourcuff has refused to hit out at his previous managers and instead told the Roma board and manager that the club needs to turn itself around or risk losing all its assets. Gourcuff has already played for two teams since joining mid season from France and Roma are now his third. Despite the lack of stability and the clear disappointment at promises of football being made and not followed through with as he was shown the door, he had only commented on his new club.

"Roma are a big team but if they let their Serie A status slip it would be disastrous. I know I wouldn't like to play in Serie B, I think relegation would see a lot of players leave for the sake of their careers. The vultures would swoop and the club would struggle to come back from that. The pressure is really on the manager."

Citizens Poised To Sign Superstar

Manchester City fans are on high alert now the club has promised to deliver a superstar by the end of the week. Manager Stuart Price was absent from training for a day this week as he left the country on a secret meeting to complete the negotiations. He refused to give a proper interview until he was ready to show off his new player but he had a quick chat with one reporter.

Do we get any clues about who you are purchasing?
"We don't want to name names not till the ink has dried but we missed out on two players in the scouting and I had to go and find an alternative straight away."

Where is he coming from?
"You know I left the country to finish the deal but we made sure it was all done quietly. There was a moment that I thought the other team were going to make things public but it was important for us to seal the deal and I am happy with how things went."

How important will the signing be to your season?
"He will be vital for us."

Thanks Stuart

Stu - Man City

Comments from Urbano Cairo.

When asked this week by a reporter what he though of the comments made by Mr. Cairo he had this to say.

All comments are welcome, I understand where Mr Cairo is coming from and I will try and keep focused but the issues with money and transfers does make this world a hard place and you easily loose concentration and day dream. I will and am trying my best, I think with some players retiring and loan players going back Im trying to focus on having a team next season and not expecting an hefty fine! Our free singing Balloteli will hopefully develop along with other youngsters, I have too admit nothing magical will come, It will take a while. Then everyone will be happy
