tactics

Just filling in my teamsheet (early for once) and it got me thinking.  Would anyone agree that a few more options would be useful? the curent ones dont really give alot? not sure if it would be possible to add more options or how hard it would be but to be honest none of the below were relevent to the formation i wanted to play or how i wanted to play.

Possession / Counter Attack / Use Wingers / Long Range Shooting

thoughts?

When redesigning the engine for the new version I purposefully left it open in the tactics section to expand further later on if need be, as I had removed the aggression and attacking features from the old game (as most played the same pair for these anyway so it made very little difference).

Suggestions for new tactics you'd want?

Richard.

What about:

Man marking (could indicate a player?)
Long Ball (England with Crouch playing)
Ball over the top (England with Owen playing) - suit teams with fast ST - like Owen used to be!
Diamond midfield (England when unsure what midfield setup they're playing)
Overlapping wing backs - useful for teams playing 3 CB + 2 FB (England when Ashley Cole is playing and he doesn't remember he's supposed to be a defender as well!).
Sweeper system

I think this would be an excellent idea that could be incorporated into the game. I also feel the same way as Luke, as sometimes teams just like to sit back, and defend right throughout the game, as they might only look for a draw and gain 1 point in matches they feel they can not win! (Like my next game agaisnt Steve's Cardiff side lol - so maybe there, an all out defense tactic could be included)

I also like some of the ideas that Steve has put across, as these options give managers a wide range of tactics that they could deploy against an opposition they feel it would perfectly against!

Cheers

News on upgrades for next season (proof FA never stops developing!!)

I'm adjusting the engine for next season to develop the tactics section. The current 4 tactics will all be adjusted a tiny bit and thats allowed me to include new options.

So far the tactics I've included for next season are:

Counter
Wingers
Possession
Distance Shooting
Long Ball
Wing Backs
Total Defence

Any more particular suggestions can be considered although obviously I don't want hundreds as it just gets too complicated for new managers.

Richard.

I wouldnt mind seeing some kind of "focus midfield" option

Ive seen Milan (and on occasion) Arsenal play this where the wingers push through central midfield to squeeze the opposition and think it could be useful tactic in the game

almost the opposite of use wingers if you like - but with more of a focus than possieson as it enables you to focus more on a tight midfield rather than total football

cheers

I agree with you.  Althought some of us would know what the tactics are, not everybody knows what all of them are.. so maybe one way would be having a short description of the tactic somewhere.  all of the above seem pretty stragiht forward though

Sorry to be thick - what does playing with wing backs mean?

I think a short description of the tactics would be good only needs to be a few words for each maybe in the rules section.

On the previous version you could submit what agression level you would play. This determined to some extent how many red and yellow cards you received, whereas this seems to be just down to luck in the new FA. Fines for badly performing (ie dirty) teams was another thing introduced just before the old FA closed and I think if agression is re introduced then some system for rewarding teams and punishing others could be brought back in as well.

Aggression was dropped for the new version as the changes to the engine meant it didn't fit in as easily as the old version had. At the time I felt this was a step backwards losing that, but most teams played the same level of aggression anyway so it had very little impact in reality, other than for those who were nutty enough to go all out "leg breaking" style.

Wing backs would be the idea of getting the fullbacks to overlap the wingers in terms of real life tactics (Ashley Cole for England is given as an example higher in this thread I think.) The difference between that and Wingers would be that your defence is adopting a far more attacking mentality with Wing Backs.

Obviously with the tactics being expanded next season, a section in the rules will be put aside to give a brief explanation of each.

Richard.
